Just for the record, my main beef with the analyses of Sowells usually presented in these forums was his naive oversimplifications and complete excission of central realities in building his premises.  His defect is ridiculous incompleteness at these preliminary stages, not that the individual elements are all totally wrong.

For instance, you do have to admit that he’s mighty powerful at explaining the mathematics behind a present value calculation.  Even if he seems to be completely unaware of the major assumptions embedded in it.  Of course, that makes him no more value-added than a canned Excel spreadsheet.

Sowell’s weekly columns, and his most quoted zingers, tend to present a simplified version of the ideas he presents in much greater detail in his books.

But having read about half of his ~40 books, I’d disagree that he naively oversimplifies *anything* in his books. His books are typically painstakingly researched, with 25-30% of the pages devoted to endnotes.

Thus, I’d take Sowell’s opinion on economics long before I’d take yours.

Sowell like every other junk researcher simply cherry picks his data to align with what he wants to sell, quite simply he lies.
The blatant obvious lie stated clearly “Welfare rushes in to solve the problem”, so the problem already exists prior to welfare, yet just moments later “Welfare causes the problem”, so a blatant lie. The problem already exists welfare is a means by which to reduce it affects.
In a competitive society for some to succeed others must fail, that is inherent, the greater the success the greater the failure.
When failure gets out of control it affects success, when insufficient people can buy products, the need to produce drops, more people are unemployed and less people can afford to buy.
When people are left with the choice of starve or steal, they will steal especially when it is their children starving.
Welfare is short circuit for declining economies temporarily subsidising consumption until the economy can pick up.
Welfare is cheaper than prison both in the cost of arrest, prosecution and imprisonment as well as of course the cost to victims.
Some people will fail, how you treat them will define the quality of your life, this in terms of the overall stability of your society as well as your risk of becoming the victim of a crime.
The reason the rich hate welfare is quite simply because then people are less exploitable, this is from a greed and lust basis, exploitable means  both labour and sex exploitable, quite simply as psychopaths and narcissist they want to exploit any man women or child for the most perverse uses.

There are several factors that are not included in this video that need to be given in order to truly understand unemployment/poverty in terms of welfare.

    1. It is better to be a single parent and obtain welfare in the US than it is to be a married couple with the same benefits. There are more incentives for a working single woman in regards to child care so that she can work.

    2. We do not know what factors helped decrease poverty in other nations around the time that their welfare was implemented. Maybe the U.S. outsourced more jobs to those countries around the same time? You cannot say that welfare directly helped people get back to work especially without other economic areas being investigated.

I definitely agree with the creator of this video, that our welfare program does not work as well as in other countries, and there needs to be some help with ours in regards to getting back to work. For example, as soon as any sort of income comes in, one must report it and the benefits go  down instantly, which does not help a person get back on their feet in a short amount of time.

As for divorce increases, I believe this is due to feminist tenancies to work with the big dogs and be so independent that home life has been forever shamed. But this is a topic for another time.

      hopefully never.

The irony is that this video proves one of Sowell’s points:

    >Liberals seem to assume that, if you don’t believe in
their particular political solutions, then you don’t really care about
the people that they claim to want to help.

    • Jin The Ninja

and what, pray tell, is the neo-con solution to poverty and inequality? take cash from lobbyists and hope the unwashed masses don’t notice?

Nice to see someone else do it. I’m more than a little tired of debunking Sowell’s heavily spun faux-intellectual cheery picked BS to people who hear his home spun platitudes and accept them whole cloth…because they want to…like a religion. You can debunk everything about them, reveal the cash flow behind his pronouncements and show the cause and effect of how profits and how from these blatant and often easily debunked lies…and it will do you no good…because the DESIRE to believe them is greater than any argument you could produce against them.

Not that I disagree with you about Sowell, but what you just described (barring the specific proper noun) also describes the majority of current American political and intellectual life.

Indeed, I don’t think the phenomenon is limited to merely North America…

  • GO_SMOKE_ANOTHER_ONE_MORON

YOU ARE AN IDIOT. SOWELL IS AN AMERICAN HERO. WELFARE TEACHES LOSERS, TO NOT BOTHER. LOSERS… ARE LAZY, AND CONTROLLED BY WHATS EASY.  I LIVE IN SWEDEN, AND YOUR NUMBERS ARE BOGUS!! Why would liberals ever get the idea that conservatives don’t care about the poor?

    • razzlebathbone

Grow a conscience or get out of the gene pool, psychopath.

    • Zach Templeton

Yo, you left your  CapsLock on bro.

  • Three Pipe Problem

Giving money to people beneath the poverty line puts them above the poverty line (for as long as handouts continue, at least)… that is earth shattering news presented as a “study”

    • Jin The Ninja

welfare doesn’t create inequality or poverty, capitalism does.

    • Andrew

So what?  There’s nothing wrong with handouts when machines do most of the work.

  • blah

You get a major thumbs down because what Sowell says about welfare is
completely true. My cousins was taken off food stamps because they were
going to college. The welfare office employees wanted him to “work” for
them in order to get it back. It is common knowledge among immigrants
that do go on welfare, that the welfare office is “the devil” they treat
people like trash and the moment you look like you are going to
improve they take it away in order to threaten you to stop improving.

    • Andrew

Yeah, your personal anecdote and “common knowledge” disprove both the facts and logic.

      • blah

Yeah, it’s a personal anecdotes that many waiting to speak with a social worker at the welfare office feel. A feeling shared by many, especially immigrants, who know SOME college majors pave the wave to success. To have  a college bound child taken off a case is a smack in the face to those this system is suppose to help. When I was in line waiting with my aunt to discussed the topic at hand, a Dominican lady who we started a conversation with, said she went through the same shenanigans at the welfare office. Unless the video poster is actively mingling with welfare recipients from all walks of life he should really just stfu.
