How Facebook Turns You Over To The Police

Ah, the social network. A Boston Phoenix story detailing law enforcement’s hunt for “Craigslist Killer” Philip Markoff reveals what Facebook sends to the cops when they subpoena your profile information (a topic about which Facebook has been very tight-lipped). What do the police receive? All of your wall posts and shares, everyone you’ve ever friended or defriended, every photo you’ve ever been tagged in (even if private or deleted), all of your “likes”, and your entire step-by-step history of activity, including every time you’ve viewed anyone’s profile:

Damn, Facebook didn’t give the police a stool sample?

Considering that facebook is shit, I would assume it’s part and parcel.

      It’s in the mail.

posting something on FB is the same thing as shouting it in a crowded bar, if you don’t want it to become common knowledge don’t put it on FB or any other social media

governements keep making new laws. what was it, 40,000 new laws introduced this year?  you can’t keep up with them, but they will surely keep up with you.

all the more reason to limit the exposure of private thoughts

Shouting it in a crowded bar would be more private than what happens currently. Any agency or law enforcement can look at your FB. And they’re going to go through your profile information and most likely care about what’s in there. Opposed to the bar goers, who will just assume your nuts and then disregard you as a loon. Maybe, just maybe, if your post is interesting enough, one of them will re-tell it in some half-ass manner to their friends. If this process continues, your original post will cease to exist at one point. All the “hugs” you bragged about getting at Anime Boston are now “giant penises” shoved into all your orifices by large black men… Wait wait, what’s the difference between posting something on FB and shouting it in a crowed bar? The lag.

If you don’t want anyone to know anything about you…..DON”T use facebook, myspace or any mass media device of any kind. work under the table and pay for everything with cash. Dont even use stores discount cards (they watch those too). Once your info is out there it’s public domain. Sure sometimes a search warrant is needed, but not always.
