Is War Porn A Natural By-Product of War?

Lynndie EnglandJoanna Schroeder wonders whether war porn is deviant, or a natural by-product of teaching young people to kill, on the Good Men Project:

The nation was shocked when we learned of more supposed bad behavior by US troops overseas, in the form of posing with the bodies of dead enemy combatants. This isn’t shocking news though, is it? It’s been happening since the beginning of this war, and as far as we know, as long as war has been happening, in one form or the other.

In a fascinating Salon.com piece, former infantry soldier and combat veteran John Rico an insider’s perspective on the function of so-called war porn, and wonders what it is about society that makes us so shocked to learn that young people who’ve been trained to fight and kill since they were 18 years old have reveled in the death of their enemies:

I have to say that I find all the political and polite posturing to be quite amusing. I say this because with a single email, attaching just a few of the files in my own treasure trove, I could ignite this controversy all over again. You see, I too have a secret collection of “war porn.”

I am not alone.

a correlation between violence and sexual domination!? no… couldn’t be…

    • Rock Lobstah

your thesis is fascinating considering that women commit more acts of domestic violence than men (see Fiebert’s annotated bibliography), and considering that women commit more child abuse/neglect/homicide than men even after adjusting for the greater number of single mothers than single fathers (see Sack’s “American Fathers Get A Bad Rap”).

i <3 trolls. they make for interesting if absurd replies.

        • Jinsretarded

How is he a troll. He had a well articulated response with references. What more do you want?

          • Jin The Ninja

            A) cute screen name.
            B) what references?
            C) what ‘well articulated’ response are you referring to? i don’t see any.

There’s nothing more dangerous than a pissed-off 18-year-old boy with a machine gun.

only since the advent of digital recording devices
has a soldier been able to better memorialize the atrocities of war
    prior to this technology
Americans could pretend that their wars were fought by good-natured Boy Scouts

Good Men Project = Pussy-Whipped, White-Knighting Humanities Grads.

I’ll take my opinions on men’s issues from men who don’t take Andrea Dworking seriously, thankyouverymuch.

    • Andrew

If you studied the humanities, your professors might’ve taught you to avoid the “ad hominem” fallacy.

      someone really likes his porn

    • Adamsshadow

I don’t take Andrea Dworkin seriously and I don’t think it’s too far-fetched to see many people, especially men, getting some kind of sexual arousal or titillation from scenes of extreme violence.  For example, I’m getting hard thinking of kicking you in the teeth right now.

I’m just kidding, of course.  Try not to be too bitter, my friend, it looks bad on everyone.

  • Madp4400

And the really sick thing about that pics is that it is obvious “to me” (and I have an intuition about these things) that the female soldier in that pic really is getting nothing out of staring at all of that c*ck. If you know what I mean?lol

  • Bruteloop

Digital technology is simply the difference. Where do people think all the Nazi etc memorabilia came from? Playing swapsies when it was over?
We should be far more worried about why young men keep getting sent to yet another war…

  • Ben Alberts

I can never load the Good Men Project homepage or any other page on that site. It always comes up “403 forbidden”. Anyone else have this problem?

My old foreman once showed me pictures from the first gulf war where he was a sniper. He showed me pictures (Kodak style actual photos, not digital)  where he and several other marines were taking turns “surfing” on the back of a decapitated enemy body on a sand dune. It gave me nightmares for months. He later told me it gave him nightmares too and he eventually burned the pictures.
