U.S. Coast Guard Sinks Japanese ‘Ghost Ship’

Ghost ShipVia Voice of America:

The U.S. Coast Guard has sunk an abandoned Japanese fishing boat off the coast of Alaska, more than a year after a tsunami sent it drifting aimlessly across the Pacific Ocean.

The 50-meter long Ryou-Un Mara went down Thursday in the Gulf of Alaska, hours after a Coast Guard vessel started shooting at it, setting fire to the so-called “ghost ship,” which had no lights, crew or communications system.

The Coast Guard decided to sink the Ryou-Un Mara because it posed a significant danger to ships sailing in the area. Officials say sinking the ship poses no risk to the environment and that any fuel on board would be evaporated by now. The sinking operation was delayed when a Canadian fishing boat expressed interest in salvaging the Japanese boat. The Canadian ship eventually determined it could not tow the crippled vessel…

They done sunk the Rooney Mara?  Stieg Larsson would be spinning in his grave.

I thought she looked Japanese. A lot of Co.Down families claim to be descended from Spanish Armada survivors. Little did we know until now that there were a few Japanese ships in the contingent.

So it took hours of shooting (taxpayer-paid-for bullets) to sink it? They couldn’t think of a less wasteful way to deal with it? Wait, dumb question: of course not. I guess it gave some bored sailors a little entertainment…at our expense.

    • I don’t really have a problem with this, and I hate the Coast Guard.

Ammo has a shelf life, just like food, so it’s not for certain that burning it up on a ship like this was a large waste of money.

The alternatives were to let it continue to drift and be a serious hazard to navigation, or tow it in and scrap it, at a loss.

The flotsam from Japan is NOT, Repeat, IS NOT dangerously radioactive.  And in other unrelated news, the USCG sent 150 tons of unremediated (oil, diesel) scrap metal to the bottom off the coast of Alaska.  Nothing to see here, please move on.
