Vatican: American Nuns Are Too Liberal, Pursuing ‘Radical Feminist Themes’

NunsReports Agence France-Presse via the RAW Story:

The Vatican has issued a scathing condemnation of the main association of Catholic nuns in the United States for taking liberal stances on contraception, homosexuality and female priests.

The Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR) said in a statement on Thursday it was “stunned” by the Vatican report which pointed to “serious doctrinal problems” and “unacceptable positions” on a range of issues.

It accused members of LCWR, which represents around 45,000 US nuns, or 80 percent of the total, of “corporate dissent” with the Church’s teachings against homosexuality and said it was pursuing “radical feminist themes”…

good. if the catholic church could ever be changed, revolutionised, it would start here. women, the poor, people of colour. you know, the people the church forgot. the underdogs.

It will never happen. A good friend of mine was a left wing catholic abbot. He died a short while back. He ran a small parish/monastic community way out of the way in Australia but was considered influential in many ways. He was also seen as a radical. I saw him only days before he died and he had just come from the Vatican. He spent three days just talking to me long into the nights about how bad it had become. That Opus Dei ran the Vatican. That recruitment of non-english speaking people from poor countries was effectively brainwashing. That priests who were left-leaning and worked for the communities and the people were seen as threats and moved away from said communities to places where they were rendered ineffectual. That the Pope is little more than a puppet and none too bright.

He intended to write about it.

      But he died too soon.

“…I saw him only days before he died and he had just come from the Vatican.”

They poisoned him while he was there visiting.    😉

No chance at reformation for the Catholic church.  When have lies, deceit, murder, suppression, misery and illogic as your foundation you have no hope to create anything “divine” whatsoever.

i agree.  although i feel that the foundations of america/capitalism are based upon the same kind of violence, oppression and suffering the church is, and therefore must be regarded (or discarded) in equal measure.

  3. I went to a Catholic high school, and they taught us about birth control there. I don’t think I’ve ever met an American Catholic who thought that the pope was truly infallible.

You can only become so reactionary before people just stop listening.

The problem is the foundation of their beliefs are utterly ludicrous and they are entirely hypocritical.  This goes for all Catholics everywhere.  I’m sorry but Jesus was not literally died and resurrected, I suggest checking out the book, “The Jesus Mysteries” and honestly studying the evidence supporting my assertion.  You will thank me later.

      • I think the reason they claimed that his body went up to heaven too is because they couldn’t fulfill habeas corpus — the whole resurrection story is total BS. Rather than claim there was no one there in the tomb to begin with, the gospels claim it vanished, poof, into the golden sky.

Methinks Geraldo drew his inspiration for the Al Capone 404 from the Catholic Church. “Nothing to see here, folks, move along.” FAIL.

Nuns are for rape, just like alter boys.

  5. Wasn’t the prediction at Fatima that this would be the last Pope? If he keeps being a backward-thinking douche like this, he will be. The population of nuns are getting demographically quite old, and new nuns are more & more rare. And frankly, he’s not being that kind to the male priests who wish to enter the modern world either.

This is not a recipe for a modern church that hopes to exist in the future.

I wish John Paul I had survived. Compared to either JPII or Ratzinger, he was a liberal, and never would have taken the church in this unenlightened direction.

Furthermore, a man like Ratzinger who played musical chairs with pedophile priests has no business lecturing others on ethics or morality.

Why don’t they just ignore and deny these “serious doctrinal problems”? Isn’t that the way they do it for the men of the church?

No wonder the nuns have gone “feminist”…….

  7. NEWSFLASH: The church is entitled to teach whatever it wants.

    • Jin The Ninja | Apr 20, 2012 at 5:26 pm |

within the confines of christianity. the truth is the church has expanded well beyond the textual and historical basis of its proclaimed faith for a long time. its history of social oppression demonstrates it is willing to pervert and abuse its ‘teachings’ for its own gain.

  8. Accused of “corporate dissent”, classic.

  9. Liberals claim to want to give a hearing to other views, but then are shocked and offended to discover that there are other views.

Who is William F. Buckley, Jr.? And why should anyone cares what he thinks of “Liberals”?

I knew for sure that the Catholic church wasn’t for me at my first confession at 16, when the creepy old pastor eagerly grilled me about the details of my masturbation habits. I can still remember the look of sadistic enjoyment on his face, really freaked me out at the time.

  11. american nuns would only get change if they have wider support and bashing them with the label ‘radical feminist’ is a way to try to socially distant support away from them

    • Jin The Ninja | Apr 20, 2012 at 5:23 pm |

i consider ‘radical feminist’ rather empowering for women in the church as it provides them with a potent societal discourse and framework. feminism is universal, but it has been so widely decried by the political establishment that it seems subversive. i never have supposed being subversive a bad thing, when it brings you away from the establishment views.

This is coming from the same institution that has the oldest “Banned Books List in the world (the “Index Librorum Prohibitorum”).

  13. Liberal Nuns?

    • Jin The Ninja | Apr 20, 2012 at 7:30 pm |

surprisingly prevelant if you know where to find them.
i went to catholic primary school and had some terrific ursuline nuns- poor, highly educated, and really into the mission of charity and very progressive (lgbtq friendly, gave meals to sex workers, taught english to immigrants). nothing like nuns from the movies.

  14. Joe Ratzinger, AKA Joey Rats, AKA The Pope (or, if you prefer Inspector Clouseau’s pronunciation, “the peoop”) has a lot to answer for when he goes to that special place all Christians fear (“Hell”) and has to ‘splain himself.

  15.  Gawdz…

Much as I’m pro man against the “Feminist agenda” which IMO is “Modern women who seek to destroy men”…  I really think it’s “Oh, Kettle, thou art black!”

I mean, all the pervert priests who were tolerated for decades, at least… And the evidence of church cover-up seeming to go to the highest levels.

But then mister “head of the Inquisition” (“Defenders of the Doctrine”, right?) Pope goes all out on priests who fornicate with ADULT WOMEN and push “Liberal/Progressive” views.  Really, they should push for a hyper-liberal world to tolerate their big (or little) “Boy” problem.

    • Jin The Ninja | Apr 22, 2012 at 2:59 pm |

what the f*ck are you talking about? what is ‘pro man’ ? misogyny? what is the ‘feminist agenda’? civil rights and equalitarianism? is rush missing one of the voices in his head?
