A Year After the Non-Apocalypse: Where Are They Now?

Judgment Day

There will be someone new to take Harold Camping’s place, these end-timers never seem to go away. Writes Tom Bartlett on Religion Dispatches:

For a while, their message was everywhere. They paid for billboards, took out full-page ads in newspapers, distributed thousands of tracts. They drove across the county in RVs emblazoned with verses from the books of Revelation and Daniel. They marched around Manhattan holding signs. They broadcasted day and night on their network of radio stations. They warned the world.

That warning turned out to be a false alarm. No giant earthquake rippled across the surface of the earth, nor were any believers caught up in the clouds. Harold Camping, the octogenarian whose nightly Bible call-in show fomented doomsday mania, suffered a stroke soon afterward and mostly disappeared from sight. The press coverage, which had been intense in the weeks leading up to May 21, 2011, dwindled to nothing. The story, as far as most people were concerned, was over.

But I wanted to know what happens next. If you’re absolutely sure the world is going to end on a specific day, and it doesn’t, what do you do? How do you explain it to yourself? What happens to your faith in God? Can you just scrape the bumper stickers off your car, throw away the t-shirts, and move on?

Doesn’t it say in the bible that no one shall know the hour or the day of Christ’s alleged return in the first place? So even if this crap was real, wouldn’t that mean that whenever someone predicts it they force it to move?

    • Rake Weiro

Logic doesn’t work on Christians. Use upside down crosses and evil chants instead.

      • Disinfo Censors Dissent

Logic doesn’t work on Marxists, either.

All the key predictions of their prophet have failed to come true. In fact, history has proceeded the opposite of what Marx predicted.

Yet Marxists still post their rants on Disinfo as if Bohm-Bewerk never existed.

        • Leachpunk

There are still Marxists? I thought they were all shuffled into the socialist movement, I didn’t realize faithful Marxists still existed. Christians on the otherhand, they’re still everywhere, go figure.

        • Anarchy Pony

          Wow you are really dumb.

        • Rake Werio

          Really!

        • Mr Willow

Forgive me if I am confusing you with someöne else—and if I am, you can disregard this (and skip to below the stars)—but aren’t you the guy who periodically posts quotes from Thomas Sowell saying “Marx has had no influence on the contemporary economic landscape” (paraphrased), and use that assertion as a means to slam Marx—a means to say “See, Marxism doesn’t work, because it hasn’t had a place in the economies of today!”—when, in fact, it should be seen as a means to bolster Marxism, considering contemporary economies—which (as a slight tangent) would include the Soviet Union, considering ‘contemporary’ for Sowell would include the 70s and 80s—are in utter shambles and, according to him, Marx had nothing to do with it? Or, at the very least, it should be taken with an indifference toward Marxism, since, again, it hasn’t had any sort of impact on the economy, and should be seen to discredit those that scream “Things went/are going to hell because the Marxists are taking over”, as, again, you can’t blame Marx or his philosophy for anything present in the modern world?

          Talk about illogical.

And anyway, why inject a criticism of Marxism into the comments’ section of an article that makes no mention of it?

I’d ask you what this post has to do with Marxism, but then I know you never answer questions.

        • DeepCough

You know who else was a false prophet: Adam Smith.

        • Charlotte

Logic doesn’t work on trolls, either.

  • Jesus

it did end. we just got instantly transferred to a parallel.

Ha Ha Ha, this article is talking about things that people beneath us believe.  Hey guys, those people are sheeple fundies.  I desperately seek approval from others and have spent years constructing a persona on this website.

I remember once trying to be logical with a Christian and they didn’t change their mind to believe as I do!!  I couldn’t even get them to admit they were wrong.  How stupid is that.  They are not open minded like us who are constantly accepting outsiders of all world views.  We are awesome logical, open minded non-trollish un-fundie people.  Right guys?  :)   :~(    :~{)

    • You’re Just So Great

Aren’t you just the cutest non conformist ever?! You prove how non conformist you are by not conforming with other non conformers, thus quite happily establishing yourself as being better than a bunch of people you deem yourself better than.
      F.O.&.D. hypocrite.

      • Adamsshadow

         Nailed it (virutal fist-bump).

    • TapMeYouFascists

      Dear EP,

Clever, but your trying to hard. You’re obviously smart enough to pinch a nerve amongst the faithful. And I always like to see smug folks who can’t take a joke get their jockies in a bunch. The generalized deconstructionist thing is getting a little cliched though. Try diversifying!

  • TapMeYouFascists

Physical reality cannot undermine these people’s faith. It’s all a test from G-d. Just like dinosaur bones, astronomy, and Catholic priests pedophilia.

I still maintain that the rapture happened. Sadly…there were like two people worthy of it…and they were hermits on mountaintops so no one saw them leave. The hate frothing psycho-babbling Christards were left behind with all the other hypocrites, false prophets and sinners…which is a shame…because it would be awesome if God swept them up and got them out of our hair once and for all.

      You too?
