Congressmen Seeks To “Lift” U.S. Propaganda Ban on Americans

Ride With HitlerThere was a ban on propaganda? “Propaganda that was supposed to target foreigners could now be aimed at Americans, reversing a longstanding policy,” writes Michael Hastings at BuzzFeed Politics:

An amendment that would legalize the use of propaganda on American audiences is being inserted into the latest defense authorization bill, BuzzFeed has learned.

The amendment would “strike the current ban on domestic dissemination” of propaganda material produced by the State Department and the Pentagon, according to the summary of the law at the House Rules Committee’s official website.

The tweak to the bill would essentially neutralize two previous acts—the Smith-Mundt Act of 1948 and Foreign Relations Authorization Act in 1987—that had been passed to protect U.S. audiences from our own government’s misinformation campaigns…

“There was a ban on propaganda?” That was my first thought as well. If so it has been thoroughly ignored from day one.

    •  Anarchy? You are saying new heights in propaganda can’t be meet?
Imagine if the government had more help in creating sheeple.

I dunno, I think forcing them to fly under the radar makes them be more creative and leads to more effective propaganda. Allowing them to be overt might make them less effective.
Besides, modern marketing and public relations have already created incredibly impressive and effective propaganda techniques, and unless you are trained to recognize it or exposed to the methods from the other side, you don’t realize it.

        • These techniques never work for long. The population slowly gets “innoculated” to these campaigns, and advertising must adapt. Have you noticed how much more ridiculous these ad campaigns have gotten in the last decade? I think they are fighting a losing battle.

  2. What a shoddy report. It doesn’t provide any context or background – the repeal of the act, specifically, would allow Voice of America and Al-Hurra to broadcast into the U.S., where they’re currently banned. They specific interest is in allowing Al-Hurra to broadcast into the U.S. to, supposedly, sooth the radicalism of Arab extremists in Michigan. (Considering what an awful production Al-Hurra, provides, however, that seems a little fanciful.)

    • Not that I don’t think there’s a role for VOA as the foreign service broadcaster … all countries have an external propaganda outlet (UK has BBC World Service, Russia has Russia Today, Iran has Press TV, etc.). This is as much a weapon as a Harpoon missile. But, as with Harpoons, they shouldn’t be used against U.S. citizens (preferably any citizens, but that ship has sailed).

    •  Did you click the link for the full article?

      • Yeah, the VOA wasn’t mentioned in it. Nor was Al-Hurra.

        Did you click the link?

    •  Here it is in a nutshell. When the get caught, they don’t want to be prosecuted. Just in case the people manage to get a people’s representative in the Presidents office instead of getting stuck with an Uncle Tom betrayer.

  3. not enough people believe in the current system to work and for good reasons as they don’t want their remaining possessions to be exploited so that the elites can continue to run the system as how they see fit, a line of reasoning that the elites would want to say is unethical to have

  4. This will only end up being pure comedy gold. Besides, there’s a lot of competition all ready out there for washing brains. The private sector is way a head of them.

another way for obama to control what we hear, see, and most of all, BELIEVE. He’s a socialist and if we don’t watch out we will end up like China and North Korea

    • JohnFrancisBittrich | May 20, 2012 at 2:26 pm |

No, he’s not. Really, he isn’t. Sorry to burst your bubble. Asshole, yes. Socialist, absolutely not.

      • JohnFrancisBittrich | May 20, 2012 at 2:28 pm |

and, in case you don’t watch the news, Congress isn’t exactly in the business of doing what Obama wants these days.

    • You are a mental defective if you actually believe that.

Now what would be a good reason for our Government wanting to do away with the Smith-Mundt Act of 1948 and, Foreign Relations Authorization Act in 1987? They wouldn’t want to fill our heads with
Propaganda, would they?! lol… Wow.. haven’t they been doing that for years now already? Why, all of a sudden the worry about going to jail?

    The Plot thickens…=O

  7. This brings to mind the assurances offered after HBGary unwittingly revealed plans for an army of cyber-sockpuppeteers to be run out of MacDill Airforce Base targeting social media and comments pages.  Relax, they said, even if we *wanted* to deploy these sorts of tactics against the domestic population, they were prevented by law from doing so…

I hate propaganda and don’t like the fact that the government likes it.  I am incredulous right now because we have been saying on this site for years that propaganda is already present.  I believe that the rest of the nation is stupid and doesn’t even realize it.  I am glad that we have all found each other, us few that have woken up.  The real problem is these idiots who think because they are members of Phi Beta Kappa and were top of their graduating class they are smarter than us.  They think because they get better grades and know more stuff and made it into positions that can influence the whole world that they are better than us.  They are wrong.  I bet if they took our advice from these posts and made them law the world would be better.  I bet that if they were posting on here they would sound stupid, not like us.  The real answers are here on DisInfo.  Some day someone important will stumble on this site and realize that all of the answers they have been seeking for centuries have been here all along.  The day they listen to all of us will be the day that all the problems are solved, right guys?

Hey you sarcastic asshole.  You have touched on some truth and now I am defensive.  I can’t handle dissenting opinion to begin with.  Fascist boot licking sheeple ignorant fundie.
