Florida’s ‘Zombie’ Attack Now Being Blamed on Bath Salts

MDPVAn update to this story, the media loves finding a drug-related culprit, doesn’t it? Via the Daily Beast:

At Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, where the victim of Saturday’s causeway attack is being treated, staff also report that they are coming face to face with cases of drug-related psychosis on an increasing scale—be they from bath salts, other designer drugs such as GHB and LSD, or cocktails thereof.

“They don’t all have these outcomes, but all have one thing in common, which is excited delirium and super strength,” said Dr. Paul Adams, an emergency room physician at the hospital, who said that in one instance a 150-pound patient took on the strength of a 250-pound hulk.

“You combine bath salts, GHB, LSD or whatever and these people become uncontrollable, you can’t reason with them,” he said. “To place someone safely in restraints, it’s taken seven security guards and one doctor.”…

28 days later…cannibal holocaust! Coming to a bath salt filled neighborhood near you!

First, it was PCP. Then crack. Now “bath salts.” Always a demonic drug, when, in reality, the reason people do crazy things is, well, because they are crazy. A drug might push someone over the edge, but it’s extremely rare that a bad drug reaction will make a mentally normative person do something extremely violent.

And someone who takes too much GHB is going to pass out, not eat someone’s face. The ignorance of many ER physicians is deplorable.

    • effinnxxrightt | May 31, 2012 at 12:44 am |

I agree, if someone is prone to violence or violent tendencies and on top of it they take drugs they are just setting themselves up for a bad situation and a very bad outcome.

I don’t believe however that they are explaining this whole incident off with supposed use of bath salts. I guarantee that man had homicidal tendencies, a history of psychosis, a mental disorder or another factor leading to this that added with his drug use or another factor led to him running naked, eating a mans face off and not being taken down by multiple bullet wounds.

But don’t allow yourself to accept bath salts as the reasoning for what happened to both of these men.

Can you tell us what your expertise is? I imagine they have seen enough of this kinda of crap to know a little of what they are talking about.

  3. Discover the true scent of horror!

BLOODBATH AND BEYOND, coming to a theater near you Summer 2012!

  4. Why do I think this is some C.I.A project gone wrong ? like making the ultimate soldier or some shit hahaha seriously though it’s horrific but some strange shit like why they were both naked ?

  5. LSD is not in the same category as bath salts, and it’s ridiculous for people to lump them together. It would be like saying “People are becoming more aware of possible dangers of wine coolers and huffing gas fumes.”

    • Janet Reno | May 30, 2012 at 8:44 pm |

I have to disagree with you Hay. You are technically correct in stating that LSD is a different category of drug that bath salts. But the possibility of psychosis is still the same. In all cases it’s the god Set and his queen Setting.

      • How many documented cases are there of someone on LSD commiting horrible acts of violence?  Yeah, you could experience a temporary reality meltdown (if you are prone to that), but these ‘bath salts’ (3,4-methylenedioxypyrovalerone) are a more like amphetamines, just meaner. Whole different animal. Dude probably hadn’t slept in days. I don’t think you need to combine it with anything for possible psycho-violent behavior. I find it highly unlikely that a bad LSD trip (alone) would make you kill.

“You combine bath salts, GHB, LSD or whatever…” Or whatever?  Dr.Adams is just talking out of his ass and throwing things like LSD in there is just to be provacative.

        • Janet Reno | May 31, 2012 at 12:45 am |

“How many documented cases are there of someone on LSD commiting horrible acts of violence?”
Unfortunately a shitload. Still minuscule compared to alcohol, though.
” I find it highly unlikely that a bad LSD trip (alone) would make you kill.”
Open mouth insert foot. Don’t get me wrong. I love psychedelics.  But do the research. People seriously flip and this leads to grizzly behavior. Did you forget the dude tripping on shrooms in Arcata, Nor Cal, a few years ago who disembowled his friend, thinking he was Satan?

          • Janet Reno | May 31, 2012 at 1:27 am |

I don’t want to be shrill but it’s really quite common for nude and freaked out teens and young men to be picked up by the cops. What it means is that our society still cannot handle altered states, since we don’t have that framework built in—yet. To help build a society where these non-ordinary states of mind can be fully integrated into the psyche of individuals is a worthy goal of anyone. We can start by repealing the Controlled Substances Act. How many bad trips were the result of paranoia of getting caught by the law? Countless.

          • Janet Reno | May 31, 2012 at 1:34 am |

“I don’t want to be shrill but it’s really quite common for nude and freaked out teens and young men [Tripping I mean] to be picked up by the cops.”

          • I’ve heard a similar story, it was two guys who disembowled their friend thinking he was Satan but they were on Datura, which is a far more likely culprit than LSD when it comes to fucked up stuff like this.

      • Calypso_1 | May 30, 2012 at 11:04 pm |

The possibility may be the same but the probability is not.

    • Finch Taylor01 | May 31, 2012 at 1:50 pm |

A cop on the case stated it’s probably some new more powerful lsd, before the toxicology reports had been done. I told my friend, like most cops this guys a fuckin idiot, and I proceeded  to tell him it’s probably bath salts. Who ended up being right? Not the dumb fuckin cop

      • That is so not true. There’s all sorts of analogs to every kind of drug, including LSD. But that doesn’t mean that real LSD will make anyone do that. Legalize drugs and then nobody will be taking the fake shit/bath salts/analogs.

  6. Sydd Stone | May 30, 2012 at 7:07 pm |

This is such BULLSHIT…i sense a new propaganda campaign starting…just when i thought we were finally over it.

  7. Liam_McGonagle | May 30, 2012 at 7:28 pm |

[Double posting deleted for your convenience. Please have a nice day.]

  8. Whenever drugs are blamed for anything other than an overdose or robbery there is another agenda at play.

  9. if LSD hadn’t been criminalized, nobody would snort “bath salts” unless they’re completely crazy anyway….. ridiculous shit, 2nd time I hear LSD mentioned with this story. And why do cops shoot to kill? A naked guy? how about pepper spray? oh wait a minute – thats for protesters only… the left wing protesters that is….

    • Ok let’s think about this one. It took several shots (some stories say up to 7) to kill this guy. Do you honestly think pepper spray would have done anything to this guy? Not a chance.

      • Are your law enforces so weak and pathetic they can’t beat a naked man down the good ol’ fashioned way- with a baton? Shooting him was beyond extreme.

        • MoralDrift | May 31, 2012 at 4:01 am |

I have to disagree here and I think it was the right thing to do. If you are crazy enough to assault another mans face with your mouth and you refuse orders to stop….then you may be shot

          • That’s fair enough, however I do feel there were alternatives. The officer wasn’t in immediate danger, no doubt he was also armed with a taser. It just seems he was a bit quick on the old trigger.

          • JaceD, I work at the county coroners office and I’m a retired Marine. The office was smart to stay the hell away from the monster. Back in Iraq, these fools were hooked up on drugs. We would be shooting these guys and they would still be charging. If that thing got too close, it would have been end of story for the office. It’s like fighting an orangutan.

          • That “thing” was a human, someone who was obviously out of their normal state of mind and on an average day wouldn’t deserve to be shot.

          • Youraturdliberal | Jun 1, 2012 at 12:15 am |

            Boo hoo apologist…

          • Is your name suppose to spell ‘Youretardliberal’ or ‘You’reaturdliberal’? You shouldn’t throw stones in glass houses bro.

          • MoralDrift | May 31, 2012 at 9:36 am |

actually I hadnt thought of the old Tazer…using a tazer probably would have been sufficient….unless of course it was a zombie

          • It would have been worth a shot (no pun intended) at least. If it was a zombie then I hope that cop double-tapped.

        • There are other stories like this with the same drugs involved where a guy got tazered twice, and still managed to grab an officers baton, and hurt her moron.

          • Ridiculous “There are other stories like this with the same drugs involved” and what drugs are these? Do you even know what you’re talking about? I’ve heard stories of a giant hairy apeman who roams the forests of North America, what’s your point?

          • What country are you from calling our law “enforces” so weak? And the point is, these drugs mess with your brain and give you superhuman abilities. No taser or baton would do anything to this guy. Case in point he was shot once by the officer, got up and growled at the officer.

      • Calypso_1 | Jun 4, 2012 at 10:14 pm |

people have a gross overestimation of the lethality of most gunshot wounds – both in degree of trauma and time of onset time for death

  10. I think bath salts is just something the government dreamed up to cover up the real story of what happened here

    • mannyfurious | May 31, 2012 at 1:37 pm |

I want to preface my comment by saying I’m supportive of the legalization of all drugs, including bath salts. Also, these are not literally bath salts, like the kind you put in your bath when you masturbate or whatever. These are synthetic amphetamines that are sold as bath salts so as to be legal.

With that said, bath salts are real and they are fucking brutal. I worked in addictions counseling for a number of years. A couple of years ago some of my clients began using bath salts to get past their UAs and still get high. A couple of guys ended up in the hospital and one got sent back to prison after he used bath salts and got into a fight at a bar and tried to use a broken bottle to rip a guys face off. As others have said, he was a man already somewhat prone to violence, which definitely plays a role in how one reacts, but he had never done anything to that extent before.

      • Hippie Porn Star | Jun 2, 2012 at 8:20 pm |

“UAs”? Undercover Astroblasters?  Only charlatans try to foist their bizare jargon on the public in order to enhance their prestige.

        • mannyfurious | Jun 4, 2012 at 11:00 am |

Yep, that’s me–a charlatan. And you managed to glean that from a silly little post on an internet message board. You are fucking perceptive, aren’t you. It must be hard walking around (or surfing the internet) with such powers of perception. You’re like a lesser member of the X-Men or some shit.

  11. LSD would never cause a person to act like this, nor give them super human strength. Stop spreading stupid lies about drugs!

  12. Amamoj7242 | May 31, 2012 at 6:39 pm |

  13. This has been blamed on everything from marijuana to bath salts…  Why can’t people just accept there are people with mental instabilities that can be set off by anything?  To me that makes a bit more sense than launching failed 30 year campaigns of imprisoning every American citizen found with a particular substance.

The solution is easy, remove the assholes who cause problems from society, and let the people keep their civil liberties.

  14. ZombiezOHMY | Jun 1, 2012 at 4:42 am |

Bath Salts is the new methamphetamine.

  15. ICUinICU | Jun 3, 2012 at 2:04 am |

I’m an ICU nurse.  I’ve seen a 70-ish woman take 5 nurses and security to subdue and place in restraints as she ripped the rails off of the bed and threw people around the room, which began about 5 minutes after an IV of Levaquin was started.  She did a good impression of someone who was possessed for about 24 hours until it was out of her system.  No psych history, no drugs on board, no alcohol, just her brain and that particular and very common antibiotic didn’t mix.  Given the way folks will sniff, smoke, eat or inject anything that someone else says will make them high…I’m actually surprised this doesn’t happen more often.

  16. ModestMatt | Jun 3, 2012 at 9:39 pm |

you cant even eat food on LSD how the fuck are you gonna eat someones face?

  17. Eclipsedriven09 | Jun 4, 2012 at 4:47 am |

No way bath salts alone caused a person to do this… Theres been mad cow testing and other equipment stolen in the month of may along with multiple cases of rabies… Multiple sudden cannibal atttacks…a passenger on a plane had to be subdued by fellow passengers…this reminds me of the movie “qaurantine2″… Theres some type of new lab created super rabies or mad cow brain desease being brewed up in my personal opinion..this shits scary…hopefully its just a phase but only time will tell…

  18. how does a man have the power 250 pound hulk because some bath salt? Hey look im in 4th grade one thing what does some guy need drugs and his freak in eyes were yellow and ate a man face off it takes like 8 bullet to kill it

  19. Antpas26 | Jun 6, 2012 at 5:51 pm |

Everyone that post that the drugs cant do that and saying the media is just saying that to ban the drugs, need to realize that this guy almost killed this other guy and plus they said they found those drugs in his body. So stop saying the drugs cant do that because it sounds like you guys are supporting him for almost killing someone.

  20. CuriousToKnow | Jun 11, 2012 at 2:30 pm |

“Like Ecstasy and methamphetamine, the drug known as “bath salts” is a designer drug, which means it’s synthetic, concocted in a lab.To understand what the drug does, think of “bath salts” as a cross between meth and acid. Like cocaine, meth, and speed, bath salts work by stimulating the central nervous system, kicking it into overdrive, but also apparently causes paranoid delusions and/or hallucinations. Experts are saying it’s psychoactive, rather than hallucinogenic like acid, but the end result appears to be similar: delusional beliefs acted upon in violent ways. The key ingredients that go into bath salts are the synthetic compounds, but there are many other ingredients used. Many of the “bath salts” seized have been found to contain extremely high levels of caffeine. The FDA refers to “bath salts” as a “designer drug of the phenethylamine class.”” – http://www.forbes.com/sites/melaniehaiken/2012/06/04/bath-salts-a-deadly-new-drug-with-a-deceptively-innocent-name/
