Florida’s ‘Zombie’ Attack Now Being Blamed on Bath Salts

MDPVAn update to this story, the media loves finding a drug-related culprit, doesn’t it? Via the Daily Beast:

At Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, where the victim of Saturday’s causeway attack is being treated, staff also report that they are coming face to face with cases of drug-related psychosis on an increasing scale—be they from bath salts, other designer drugs such as GHB and LSD, or cocktails thereof.

“They don’t all have these outcomes, but all have one thing in common, which is excited delirium and super strength,” said Dr. Paul Adams, an emergency room physician at the hospital, who said that in one instance a 150-pound patient took on the strength of a 250-pound hulk.

“You combine bath salts, GHB, LSD or whatever and these people become uncontrollable, you can’t reason with them,” he said. “To place someone safely in restraints, it’s taken seven security guards and one doctor.”…

    First, it was PCP. Then crack. Now “bath salts.” Always a demonic drug, when, in reality, the reason people do crazy things is, well, because they are crazy. A drug might push someone over the edge, but it’s extremely rare that a bad drug reaction will make a mentally normative person do something extremely violent. 

    And someone who takes too much GHB is going to pass out, not eat someone’s face. The ignorance of many ER physicians is deplorable.

      I agree, if someone is prone to violence or violent tendencies and on top of it they take drugs they are just setting themselves up for a bad situation and a very bad outcome. 

      I don’t believe however that they are explaining this whole incident off with supposed use of bath salts. I guarantee that man had homicidal tendencies, a history of psychosis, a mental disorder or another factor leading to this that added with his drug use or another factor led to him running naked, eating a mans face off and not being taken down by multiple bullet wounds. 

      But don’t allow yourself to accept bath salts as the reasoning for what happened to both of these men.

        No, they clearly don’t. Since it wasn’t “Super LSD,” bath salts, PCP or anything else. The tox report only showed that at some point the previous few weeks, he had smoked marijuana. Oops.

    LSD is not in the same category as bath salts, and it’s ridiculous for people to lump them together. It would be like saying “People are becoming more aware of possible dangers of wine coolers and huffing gas fumes.”

      I have to disagree with you Hay. You are technically correct in stating that LSD is a different category of drug that bath salts. But the possibility of psychosis is still the same. In all cases it’s the god Set and his queen Setting.

        How many documented cases are there of someone on LSD commiting horrible acts of violence?  Yeah, you could experience a temporary reality meltdown (if you are prone to that), but these ‘bath salts’ (3,4-methylenedioxypyrovalerone) are a more like amphetamines, just meaner. Whole different animal. Dude probably hadn’t slept in days. I don’t think you need to combine it with anything for possible psycho-violent behavior. I find it highly unlikely that a bad LSD trip (alone) would make you kill.

            I don’t want to be shrill but it’s really quite common for nude and freaked out teens and young men to be picked up by the cops. What it means is that our society still cannot handle altered states, since we don’t have that framework built in—yet. To help build a society where these non-ordinary states of mind can be fully integrated into the psyche of individuals is a worthy goal of anyone. We can start by repealing the Controlled Substances Act. How many bad trips were the result of paranoia of getting caught by the law? Countless.

            I’ve heard a similar story, it was two guys who disembowled their friend thinking he was Satan but they were on Datura, which is a far more likely culprit than LSD when it comes to fucked up stuff like this.

       A cop on the case stated it’s probably some new more powerful lsd, before the toxicology reports had been done. I told my friend, like most cops this guys a fuckin idiot, and I proceeded  to tell him it’s probably bath salts. Who ended up being right? Not the dumb fuckin cop

        That is so not true. There’s all sorts of analogs to every kind of drug, including LSD. But that doesn’t mean that real LSD will make anyone do that. Legalize drugs and then nobody will be taking the fake shit/bath salts/analogs.

            JaceD, I work at the county coroners office and I’m a retired Marine. The office was smart to stay the hell away from the monster. Back in Iraq, these fools were hooked up on drugs. We would be shooting these guys and they would still be charging. If that thing got too close, it would have been end of story for the office. It’s like fighting an orangutan.

      I want to preface my comment by saying I’m supportive of the legalization of all drugs, including bath salts. Also, these are not literally bath salts, like the kind you put in your bath when you masturbate or whatever. These are synthetic amphetamines that are sold as bath salts so as to be legal.

      With that said, bath salts are real and they are fucking brutal. I worked in addictions counseling for a number of years. A couple of years ago some of my clients began using bath salts to get past their UAs and still get high. A couple of guys ended up in the hospital and one got sent back to prison after he used bath salts and got into a fight at a bar and tried to use a broken bottle to rip a guys face off. As others have said, he was a man already somewhat prone to violence, which definitely plays a role in how one reacts, but he had never done anything to that extent before.

    This has been blamed on everything from marijuana to bath salts…  Why can’t people just accept there are people with mental instabilities that can be set off by anything?  To me that makes a bit more sense than launching failed 30 year campaigns of imprisoning every American citizen found with a particular substance.

    The solution is easy, remove the assholes who cause problems from society, and let the people keep their civil liberties.

    I’m an ICU nurse.  I’ve seen a 70-ish woman take 5 nurses and security to subdue and place in restraints as she ripped the rails off of the bed and threw people around the room, which began about 5 minutes after an IV of Levaquin was started.  She did a good impression of someone who was possessed for about 24 hours until it was out of her system.  No psych history, no drugs on board, no alcohol, just her brain and that particular and very common antibiotic didn’t mix.  Given the way folks will sniff, smoke, eat or inject anything that someone else says will make them high…I’m actually surprised this doesn’t happen more often.

    No way bath salts alone caused a person to do this… Theres been mad cow testing and other equipment stolen in the month of may along with multiple cases of rabies… Multiple sudden cannibal atttacks…a passenger on a plane had to be subdued by fellow passengers…this reminds me of the movie “qaurantine2″… Theres some type of new lab created super rabies or mad cow brain desease being brewed up in my personal opinion..this shits scary…hopefully its just a phase but only time will tell…
