The Anti-Science Streak in Federal Marijuana Policy

MarijuanaConnor Friedersdorf explains in The Atlantic:

The classification of cannabis as a schedule one narcotic is among the least defensible aspects of prohibition.

Dr. Jody Corey-Bloom, director of the Multiple Sclerosis Center at UC San Diego, recently helped run a study that provided multiple sclerosis patients with either a marijuana joint or a placebo that looked, smelled, and tasted like marijuana. After smoking whichever substance they were given, patients were tested to see if it reduced their muscle spasticity — an affliction, common to MS patients, that causes painful, uncontrollable spasms of the extremities. Spasticity was unaffected among the placebo patients but dropped 30 percent on average among the patients given real marijuana. The side effects? “Smoking caused fatigue and dizziness in some users,” says Reuters, “and slowed down people’s mental skills soon after they used marijuana.”

The UC San Diego study is just the latest to suggest that marijuana has some medical benefits. Sixteen states, thousands of doctors, and tens of thousands of sick people concur in that judgment. It is dramatized by the personal testimony of sick people who are offered much more powerful drugs, but nevertheless insist that consuming marijuana was most effective at helping them.

Marijuana is nevertheless classified under the Controlled Substances Act as a Schedule One drug…

THIS STUFF MAKES ME SO MAD!! AHHHHHH!!!  I’ve been smoking marijuana almost every day for 20 years and I’m in perfect health. My lungs are perfect, cholesterol is perfect, blood pressure is perfect, my IQ is 154, iv’e never been arrested for anything, other than marijuana. I hold two engineering degree’s and work for a great company. I just can’t figure out why people think marijuana is bad.. Marijuana helped my father with his cancer, my aunt with her scleroderma, my brother with his broken elbow and one of my best friends with his PTSD. It’s a miracle plant!

I think the 1960’s false propaganda did a lot to set it back. I hope they legalize it one day for the people who choose to use it.

    • I don’t believe they give a damn about marijuana at all.  I think it’s an excuse to put people in prison and fulfill their obligations to the “Corrections Industry”.

I agree with you there, when business takes over the prisons it is the governments duty to support the prison industry. (with sarcasm).  But seriously, wasn’t the private prison system tried before and there was coruption beyond measure in the industry.

    •  As Hilary Clinton Secretary of State to Barack Obama (I’ll discuss it but NO) said ‘there’s to much money in it’ to legalise it.
To much money in make believe patents on what you can already easily grow in your backyard, to much money in wood pulp, to much money in cotton, to much money in synthetics, to much money in illegal drug deals, to much money being laundered through American banks and to much money in the DEA and pals.
That millions of people have to have their lives destroyed in order to keep the illegal drug money flowing, meh, who cares. Money versus people, Barack says, screw the people and show me the money.

Oh well, just gotta keep getting high on the down low.

  3. They’re trying to build a prison,
They’re trying to build a prison,
They’re trying to build a prison,
for you and me to live in

    Another prison system,
    Another prison system,
    Another prison system.
For You and Me … Obey the Rules !

The United States just plain hates progress.

  5. Drugs are for losers. I’ve seen potheads become apathetic, lazy, and selfish people who neglect their families. All they care about is getting high. The myth that marijuana is safer than alcohol is a lie right from Satan.

Lolz, are you serious? Or trolling? Cuz if you’re serious you probably ought to find some other site to play on.

Hey WilliamS, Satan tells me that your a religious-nut-job sent here to oppress others from their right to seek happiness. If your life is so inadequate that you have to worry about what others do with theirs’ than maybe you should go seek a hobby, one that doesn’t involve indoctrinating others with your whacked out ideology. Why don’t you go sip on your man made poison (alcohol) and let the rest of us partake in the benefits of a naturally grown seed barring plant.

      •  And the Earth brought forth grass, and Herb yielding seed, and God saw that it was good- And the morning and the evening were the third day… Genesis…

    •  You are a fucking idiot- Ive seen a lot of people who are lazy and apathetic, and they never smoked MJ- you are just stupid and bigoted- Go get drunk, you fool.  I have been happily smoking the sacrament for, oh, 56 years now- and what the hell do you care what I do to myself in my own house?  Go have another drink, and oh- some tobacco, too- Then go drive your car, and see how fast you can go-  See you on the other side…asshole!
