Teens Prefer Smoking Marijuana To Cigarettes

Some encouraging news regarding the state of today’s teenagers.  CBS News says:

A government survey shows more teens are now smoking pot than cigarettes. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Thursday that 23 percent of high school students said they recently smoked marijuana, while 18 percent said they had puffed cigarettes.

For decades, the number of teens who smoke has been on the decline. Marijuana use has fluctuated, and recently rose. At times, pot and cigarette smoking were about the same level, but last year marked the first time marijuana use was clearly greater. A Michigan expert said teens today apparently see marijuana as less dangerous than cigarettes.

Why not smoke some pot? Other than occasionally causing you to look like a dumbass, it’s far better than a cig.

    • Jin The Ninja

i’ve always found it preferable to smoke both- especially if it made my teachers/parents nervous…

I worry about young people making these decisions without having a good knowledge base.  Until such time as people can feel free to have honest fact based discussions about cannabis and the quality and safety of cannabis can be assured these decisions may be beyond the reach of most young people.  And only to confuse the issue more, is the “synthetic pot” which isn’t a cannabis product at all.  This word game only adds to the confusion  eg.  synthetic “pot” — danger  – death, read, pot — danger — death.  The government and the media has squandered its credibility long ago and so, sadly this so called “synthetic pot” may indeed may be deadly toxic, most warnings will most likely go unheeded by young people, some of whom lake good judgment skills.  It breaks my heart to see something bad happen to a young person and I am outraged when I believe it is preventable!

Dude, you need to smoke a bowl and chill out.

      You seriously are THC deficient.

High school drug education paints a fictitious picture of the harm of drugs, they try to potray drugs as a demon in society that can only cause harm, then when some curious teens decide to smoke up they find that it’s actually not as they’ve been taught and everything’s fine… But some move on to truely damaging substances; meth, heroine and other junk drugs and that’s when the real damage is caused. If drug education wasn’t determined on focusing on extreme causes to try deter teens from using and focused on the real effects and what can happen and what usually does happen it might not put teens off (why should it?) but it will make them more aware of what they’re doing and what the next step could be and where it might take them.

Synthetic “pot” and other legal highs are by far more damaging than the real stuff, there are chemicals in that shit that are far more dangerous than what you’ll find in a natural plant. “Synthetic” is the question and answer

  • Haystack

As they should be. Tobacco is expensive, addictive as Hell, yellows your teeth and nails, and doesn’t even get you high. What’s the point?

Honestly, if I had kids, and they were smoking something, I’d much rather it be pot.

    • elesdee

Considering the immensely positive impact marijuana has had on my life, its vast medicinal and industrial uses,  and that its basically benign to ones health, you can bet you’re ass that i will teach my kids what smoking is, and how its a powerful and beautiful plant ally to have

      • Anarchy Pony

Well, let’s not confuse industrial hemp and the reefer. While closely related, they aren’t the same. Each being purposefully bred for their respective uses.

      • Haystack

For some people it is, but I think that for most it’s mainly just a bad habit, so I wouldn’t go as far as promote it to anyone…except perhaps as an alternative to cigs.

I quit smoking. It’s very hard, but I’m glad I did.
I’ll tell you, this war against drugs in the US is the reason I quit
because I got too fuckin’ sick of being on the wrong side.
The war against drugs, which actually is a war against civil rights, don’t ever be fooled again.
    If they cared about us they’d get rid of the number one drug which is cigarettes;
kills more people than crack, coke, and heroin combined, times 100.
    Legal.
    Bill Hicks

    • Anarchy Pony

But did Bill realize that it’s really all just a profiteering scam by the M-I-C?

      • http://buzzcoastin.posterous.com BuzzCoastin

most of Gary Webb’s reporting about CIA drug dealing
        didn’t come out until 1996
a few years after Bill’s death
        but it would surprise me
        if he hadn’t already put 2 + 2 together

his war on drugs commentary could be updated to:
The reason the US is losing the war on drugs
is because the CIA is the world’s drug lord
and the DEA is it’s bitch.

        • Cheftommyboy

in a previous article on this website, it refers to the fact that only 2.6% of the drug money is held in the country of its origin, the rest of the 97.4% are in the hands of the Banking Establishment of the First World…how much money do you think that is?? ….This is the true reason why the war on drugs continues and why politians do not change the laws (becuase they are bought) ……..money talks bullshit walks

    • rtb61

Here’s an interesting thought, the war on drugs is meant to be targeted at drug dealers, yet, drug dealers are the people who most want the war on drugs to continue, they can only rake in those huge profits if it continues.
The ‘War On Drugs’ 100% of organised crime and terrorist drug dealers support it.

It’s easier for highschool kids to get pot than cigarettes. Drug dealers don’t ID.

    Commentary here = WTF?

  • Redacted

No reason not to smoke pot the way I look at it. When was the last time someone smoked pot and got into a bar fight?

    • JaceD

lol that clip brings back memories!

  • Ciggy

Pot makes me lazy! But I get the sleep I need when I smoke it. Smoking when I have things to do has caused problems by lowering my energy in general. Def good for people that need to be ok with being in bed all day. But for recreation, I like pot way better than an all out alcohol binge. I rather smoke lots of pot and keep it light on the alcohol. All in moderation. Seems like the government wants certain types of people in jail and use drugs as an easy to commit serious crime , sort of a pre-crime system to put certain people away for some time over nothing, before they commit something real. And of course the mumchies will come, and  pot can cause paranoia depending on how the mind is working, But its harmless and if anything makes people think seriously about their problems, which can make them come to a solution to those problems. It does relax, and abstract mental process so forgetfulness can occur, which was probably what happened with the lady that left the kid on top of the car, but anything bad involving a baby is a major foul, and her choice to smoke while with the child and not the drug itself caused the problem.

“teens today apparently see marijuana as less dangerous than cigarettes.”

Hmmm i wonder why, teenagers arent completely retarded. Pot is safer than cigs its as simple as that

  • DeepCough

We should all thank the Drug War for making this happen, irony of ironies.

  • Apathesis

I blame all of my purchases of unfiltered Lucky Strike cigarettes on Hideo Kojima.

  • saint_al

Better to vaporize, but the smarter kids already know.

  • BiggerFishToFry

Teens prefer smoking Marijuana over Cigarettes But prefer Pills of all kinds and cocaine over Marijuana to get high that is the real issue here, do a article on that!!!

  • general hydroponics

Absolutely, Marijuana is much safer than smoking cigarettes. In fact, study says medical marijuana can help cure numerous health conditions like cancer, HIV, etc.

To mention about the latest buzz around, 74 year old comedian-actor Tommy Chong is suffering from prostate cancer. Yes that quite sad but this marijuana freak is not only healing his prostate cancer but is using hemp oil to cure the prostate cancer.

Hard to believe, check out the complete story here: http://bigbudsmag.com/news/article/tommy-chong-marijuana-prostate-cancer-cheech-battle

The marijuana community send prayers and good will to Tommy Chong, and
we passionately hope that the healing herb will ease his pain and stop
his cancer so he can live and prosper.
