Dozens of Genetically Modified Babies Already Born – How Will They Alter Human Species?

By Dr. Mercola:

When I first read that genetically modified humans have already been born, I could hardly believe it. However, further research into this story featured in the UK’s Daily Mail proved it to be true. They’ve really done it… they’ve created humans that nature could never allow for, and it’s anyone’s guess as to what will happen next.

Even more shocking was the discovery that this is actually old news!

The Daily Mail article was not dated, and upon investigation, the experiments cited actually took place over a decade ago; the study announcing their successful birth was published in 2001.

While I typically comment on recent findings and health related news, in this case I will make an exception, because I think many of you may be as surprised by this information as I was. I do not propose to have any answers here as this is out of my scope of expertise.

At best, I hope I can stir you to ponder the implications of this type of genetic engineering, and I invite you to share your perspective in the vital votes’ comment section below. As reported in the featured article:

“The disclosure that 30 healthy babies were born after a series of experiments in the United States provoked another furious debate about ethics… Fifteen of the children were born… as a result of one experimental program at the Institute for Reproductive Medicine and Science of St Barnabas in New Jersey.

The babies were born to women who had problems conceiving. Extra genes from a female donor were inserted into their eggs before they were fertilized in an attempt to enable them to conceive.

Genetic fingerprint tests on two one-year- old children confirm that they have inherited DNA from three adults—two women and one man.”

Human Germline Now Altered… What Happens Next?

Today, these children are in their early teens, and while the original study claims that this was “the first case of human germline genetic modification resulting in normal healthy children,” later reports put such claims of absolute success in dispute. Still, back in 2001, the authors seemed to think they had it all under control, stating:

“These are the first reported cases of germline mtDNA genetic modification which have led to the inheritance of two mtDNA populations in the children resulting from ooplasmic transplantation. These mtDNA fingerprints demonstrate that the transferred mitochondria can be replicated and maintained in the offspring, therefore being a genetic modification without potentially altering mitochondrial function.”

It’s relevant to understand that these children have inherited extra genes—that of TWO women and one man—and will be able to pass this extra set of genetic traits to their own offspring. One of the most shocking considerations here is that this was done—repeatedly—even though no one knows what the ramifications of having the genetic traits of three parents might be for the individual, or for their subsequent offspring…

Who cares..the notion of a “pure” human being is ludicrous. Environment, culture, chemicals, all these things have altered mankind in an erratic fashion and way. So what the fuck is the big deal with grasping the erratic reigns and setting a fixed direction and course? Genetic engineering! FUCK YEAH!

    • Your 8th grade level public school education (indoctrination) is showing.  What an independant thinker you are.

      • And your condescending rich kid who didn’t quite make it to an ivy league school education is showing. We shouldn’t be screwing with the human genome without knowing what may happen but at the same time he is correct. Genetic engineering of humans is going to come sooner or later and it likely wont be the big deal everyone thinks it is. These kids from the tone of the article appear to be living normal lives. they may have gotten their genes from 3 individuals instead of 2 but they still have the same 46 chromosomes as everyone else and the genetic information on those chromosomes came from the same gene pool as all humans. Therefore these humans should be literally no different from the rest of the population. Its not as if the experiments tried to imbue them with super strength or perfect immune systems.

Genetic engineering is happening. Driving it underground or slighting the funds this research receives is not a solution. Science is going to obviously move forward. With each new scientific endeavor there are risks involved but that does not mean we should outright reject it and fear it. Technology is neutral. It can be used for good and bad. Understanding of atoms have given us the atomic bomb AND the personal computer. Genetic tinkering may in fact give us strange lifeforms and new problems but it may indeed cure the human species of all types of diseases outright.

first we need technology to monitor these experiments and give the masses full transparency.

    • because genetics is a highly complex language where natural birth has a much better understanding of grammar, syntax sentence structure, plot, and story structure.

What if we just went around taking the scariest sentences out of horror novels and replaced them with “and then the sun came out and it was bright shiny and happy and made rainbows and happy happy happy flow out.” simply because that stupid sentence was in a best seller(it turns out that best seller was a kids novel).

  2. No effect. Serious genetic tinkering should be considered and act of War. We have no real idea of what we’re even doing.

We are not at this level yet.

I further would like to add is that only the seriously naive people would consider it ok. It is not the science that is the problem it`s the application. They can repair certain deficiencies sure & if that were all they do it would be great. They problem is what if they decide to create tiny little people as slaves or Giants or fish people , reptilians or vampires, werewolves or gargoyles. How about they make really stupid people with big muscles to use as work horses. Maybe if you go arrive home to find a scorpion ten feet long & six feet just ate your family you would have a different opinion. Yes they are that crazy, it seems that usually they do a few what people see as good things to get the funding & the trust to do really evil & mad things.

      • well there’s sayings going on that humanity is absorbing the whole biosphere into itself in a manner of speaking, maybe the only way to return to some sort of balance is to throw devolved post-humans back into the world to regain balance. (maybe we can make plant people too… but.. what would the fruit be… i don’t want to think about that one)

It’s the xmen fool. Your forgot to mention wolverine people!!!!!!!!! And most people people with super muscles are kinda dumb but they sure are stubborn. I lift things up and put them down. We need energy gathering technology at the gym. But you are right the application is the problem. They should genetically engineer people to have better moral and hygiene and taste in music.

  3. the irony is that there are laws
that prohibit people from using certain plants created by evolution
and certain drugs that alter consciousness or improve physical function

but there seems to be no laws or regulations
    controlling the manipulation of DNA

obviously humans this stupid should not be playing with DNA
but I can’t wait to meet the girl with five vaginas

  4. is it much different than an accelerated version of genetic tracking?

“Your Baby Has a ~10% chance for the following diseases:”
    ABC disease
    DEF disease
    MNO disease
    STU disease

    [  ]  Yes

    [  ]  No

  5. We have to start somewhere.

  6. let’s not forget the blind selfishness of those that can’t conceive, fucking deal with it, get a puppy, adopt, plenty of those in need of love, being parents is more than reproducing your dumb genetics.

  7. this is so wrong and they do not even no the outcome i really think these scientists are mad and i dont trust them nor their work i am afraid for the human race only because the goal is to produce some sort of hybrid while they kill us off…the rest of humanity..any sort of science or messing around with DNA is sort of just out there i realize it is science but when some of these scientists create things to see what happens that is a dangerous thought i don’t trust these sort of doctors.. they appear to be mad and it appears they love to do things that alter DNA; i dont trust them at all and i think they should be banned from doing this sort of crap..

  8. I cant wait for us to get to the point where Muad Dib is born!!! Long live the Sisterhood!

  9. Callmemaybe | Jul 18, 2012 at 9:28 pm |

XMEN!!! I want the power to get people high with my touch. Oh wait I already got that, its called my hotness.

  10. I hope they’re strictly labeled, because I refuse to eat GMO babies.

  11. If it removes hereditary disease without practices like abortion, infanticide and euthanasia then some kind of genetic modifiation needs to be a good thing. People can be sterilised by law to prevent them passing on harmful genes, yet by germinal selection, still breed and have healthy children.
