Taiwanese Teen Dies In Internet Cafe After 40 Straight Hours Of Video Games

In all honesty, gazing at the packaging of this so-called Diablo III, it seems implied that a few users will die while playing. Via the Australian:

The Taiwanese teenager collapsed and died at an internet cafe after playing Diablo 3, a popular online video game, for 40 consecutive hours, according to Australian Associated Press. The 18-year-old identified by only his surname, Chuang, booked a private room at the cafe in Tainan around noon on July 13 and played for nearly two days without eating.

On the morning of July 15, an attendant entered the room and found Chuang resting on a table. After the attendant woke him, he stood, took a few steps and then collapsed, the report said. He was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at a local hospital.

In February, heart failure was the attributed cause of the reported death of a man in New Taipei who was found dead, slumped in a chair facing a computer with his arms still reaching out for the keyboard after playing for 23 hours.

  1. This story is two months old,
Diablo3 sucked HUGELY! (which means this poor dudes death was uncalled for)
As a gamer and long time player of Blizzard games, Diablo3 was a huge disappointment, along the lines of the great Dungeon Siege 3 letdown. More and more of these games recently that come out of image factories with zero imagination.

On a side note; Korean authorities raided the Blizzard head quarters in Korea (we just assume I’m talking about South Korea, yes?) (big headquarters because StarCraft (which has nothing to do with stars or crafting) is a national sport in Korea) after Diablo3 sucked so bad that they were unable to refund the masses of fans wanting their money back fast enough to keep them from getting furious. And recently new laws have been passed in Korea to further control the actions of online gaming companies like Blizzard.

I think this poor dude’s death was uncalled for irrespective of the quality of the game. How hard is it to get some sleep and popcorn?

  3. Going two days with out food won’t kill you. Young people die from heart failure sometimes…

    “Achievement Unlocked–You’re Dead! LOL”

  5. Wonder if the teen had other health problems which combined with lack of sleep to kill him. I once made the mistake of staying up 46 hours to get a project for a startup done by deadline when I was in my late 20s… the taxi driver wound up helping me to my apartment. Slept 12 hours and the only ill effect was having to spend 4 hours fixing the mistakes I made based on fatigue. *Don’t* try this at home. Or at all. Whether for work or fun, one night without sleep happens once in a while. More than one and you will screw yourself up AND whatever it is you are trying to do.
