German Pussy Riot Copycats Face Jail For Church Protest

The two-year prison sentences handed down to Pussy Riot supposedly revealed how oppressive and backwards Putin’s Russia is, in contrast to our Western democracies. But now three colorfully ski-masked Germans who tried to stir a commotion at the historic Cologne Cathedral earlier this week are staring at the possibility of three years behind bars. Any guesses on what would happen to a U.S. Pussy Riot, assuming some sort of terrorism charges would be thrown at them?

But I’ve heard that the judicial system has a way of preventing excessively punitive sentences in cases of legitimate political oppression.

The rule of law has deteriorated rapidly in the Western world. The Owners don’t even make pretense about it anymore. Next up is social collapse, followed by cultural collapse. Dmitry Orlov outlines it all very well, here: http://cluborlov.blogspot.com/2008/02/five-stages-of-collapse.html

RT.com is a Russian state-sponsored propaganda news.  I wouldn’t trust this story for a second.

I’ve been trying to find new information about this story for the last few days, but pretty much the only english-language reports about it come from RT, which I do not trust. I notice how they accentuate the “three years in prison” aspect right in the headline, despite the fact that such a sentence is very far from being decided.

But the point remains–they haven’t even gone to trial yet.  Even the German articles say this. A bit of an exaggeration, if not an outright lie, to say they’ve received a 3-year sentence.

RT’s either being incredibly, unforgivably sloppy, or it’s just doing what it’s been told.

        • Tchoutoye

According the the German press, they have been charged with breaching the peace and disturbing a religious service and could face up to three years in jail:

“Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger, a local newspaper, reports that ‘disturbing a religious establishment’ could result in a fine or up to three years imprisonment, according to a HuffPost translation.”

Which is what RT are saying on their website:

“Three years in prison have become a closer prospect for some German followers of Russian punk band Pussy Riot. ”

          http://rt.com/news/pussy-riot-cologne-cathedral-463/

Noun: The possibility or likelihood of some future event occurring.

And some people have their heads so far up their asses that they don’t appreciate the PRACTICAL impact of a headline including the phrase “FACE JAIL”.

I know you love you some Putin, but unless you agree with my statement that they haven’t even gone to trial yet, I’d have to call you a shill.

Well, unless the big, bad Putin monster has infiltrated Disinfo, then the title you’re referring to is actually Jacob Sloan’s of Disinfo, not RT’s. Furthermore, looking at RT’s site, they have a video titled “Up to 3 years: Pussy Riot copycats booted from German cathedral may face jail (VIDEO)” In other words, they properly described the situation by saying “MAY FACE JAIL”. Keyword: “MAY”.

It looks like your misdirected anger and myopic worldview had you jump the gun on that one. Don’t worry, the Soviet Union is dead.

It’s not Russiaphobia, Its simply looking at the facts. A ‘Maximum’ of three years ‘might’ be given and would be very unlikely. In Russia the maximum was 9 years and the 3 years given to pussy riot was considered a light sentence by their authorities.

Yes I know it’s been in the German press, I was talking about english-language reports. There are some more now, but the main english sources seem to be RT, and like I said, they are accentuating the prospect of a potential prison term that exceeds the Russian equivalent.

The whole affair has led to some interesting media activity. It’s like each news outlet, representing different national interests, are each trying to out-do one another on how ‘tolerant’ and ‘free’ their respective nations are. The western press does it by condemning Russia’s attack on freedom of expression, while the Russian press tries to highlight equivalents in western nations (even though in this case, it’s very doubtful those protestors will get anything more than a fine).

Perhaps this will lead to some kind of international ‘tolerance war’!

a U.S. Pussy Riot copycat would be better served by going to church in full Balaklava and just sitting there silently.

The Pussy Riot affair is an obvious propaganda attack against Russia on the part of the Anglo-Americans. Doesn’t get any more clear cut than this. A lot of people were duped on account of their atheistic inclinations. Others harbor latent Cold War-style animosity toward Russia.
As a result of the whole farce, Putin has been forced into making an example of the girls. At the same time, the man was a thug when he was young, and so he’ll probably give the girls a break. He’ll let them go in a few months. The girls’ career may even benefit from the affair. They’ve proven their punk credentials and are now world famous. Lots of would-be starlets out there would submit to greater ordeals for lighter boons.

Now watch as the story about the German version of Pussy Riot gets buried. And it will be buried. Why? Because there is a double standard. The August 2011 hooligans in the UK were thugs and looters and had to be jailed. The marine who just got sent to the loony bin in the US is an enemy of the state. The Pussy Riot hooligans in Russia are free-speech advocates and whatever and should be at liberty to go into people’s churches and scream obscenities.

Perhaps there is a difference between legitimate protest and taking a dump on someone’s lawn. What do you think would happen to you if you go to some (privately owned) synagogue or church and start screaming “GAWD IS DEAD! YOU ALL SUCK!” at the top of your lungs? Yep, you might end up in the slammer. And you’d have only yourself to blame.
