Harvard Study Says Fluoride Lowers Children’s IQ

But it keeps their teeth shiny white and strong for photos. Via the Harvard School of Public Health:

In a meta-analysis, researchers from Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) and China Medical University in Shenyang for the first time combined 27 studies and found strong indications that fluoride may adversely affect cognitive development in children.

The researchers conducted a systematic review of studies, almost all of which are from China where risks from fluoride are well-established. Fluoride is a naturally occurring substance in groundwater, and exposures to the chemical are increased in some parts of China. Virtually no human studies in this field have been conducted in the U.S., said lead author Anna Choi, research scientist in the Department of Environmental Health at HSPH.

They then analyzed possible associations with IQ measures in more than 8,000 children of school age; all but one study suggested that high fluoride content in water may negatively affect cognitive development.

The average loss was only half of one IQ point, but some studies suggested that even slightly increased fluoride exposure could be toxic to the brain. Thus, children in high-fluoride areas had significantly lower IQ scores than those who lived in low-fluoride areas. The children studied were up to 14 years of age, but the investigators speculate that any toxic effect on brain development may have happened earlier, and that the brain may not be fully capable of compensating for the toxicity.

“Fluoride seems to fit in with lead, mercury, and other poisons that cause chemical brain drain,” senior author Philippe Grandjean says. “The effect of each toxicant may seem small, but the combined damage on a population scale can be serious, especially because the brain power of the next generation is crucial to all of us.”

I’m confused about your link. This article doesn’t link to any Reuters articles with sensationalist claims, it links to a Harvard study. What does that link have to do with this?

Wong is a fucking idiot who should stick to whining about video games.

At least it is a step in the right direction.

Mr. Grandjean appears to be striving to emulate Steven F. Arnold’s findings, while he was at Tulane University, that low doses of many pesticides act synergistically to create harm at doses far below those required for a single substance to create harm.  I hope he succeeds the same way that Dr. Arnold succeeded.

Harvard School of Public Health has become the World’s leading purveyor of junk epidemiology.  The safe course is to assume that nothing that they publish is accurate until confirmed by research at a less politically correct organization.

This is bullshit article that doesn’t indicate anything. Just a blabber of incoherent facts, oh wait there are none in this article. Waste of my 5 minutes…

    • Facts, I gotcha facts kiko

Key Findings – Fluoride & the Brain: (Click for more detail)1) Fluoride’s ability to damage the brain represents one of the most active areas of research on fluoride toxicity today.
      2) The research on fluoride and the brain has been fueled by 18 human studiesfrom China, India, Iran, and Mexico finding elevated levels of fluoride exposure to be associated with IQ deficits in children. Fluoride’s impact on IQ is exacerbated among children with low-iodine exposure.
      3) The impact of fluoride on children’s IQhas been documented even after controlling for children’s lead exposure, iodine exposure, parental education and income status, and other known factors that might impact the results (Rocha-Amador 2007; Xiang 2003 a,b).
      4) In addition to IQ studies, 3 studies (Yu 1996; Du 1992; Han 1989) have found that fluoride accumulates in the brain of the fetus, causing damage to cells and neurotransmitters and 1 study (Li 2004) has found a correlation between exposure to fluoride during fetal development and behavioral deficits among neonates.
      5) Several recent studies have found that even adult exposures to fluoride may result in central nervous system disturbances, particularly among industrial workers.
      5) The findings of neurological effects in fluoride-exposed humans is consistent with, and strengthened by, recent findings from over 40 animal studies published since 1992. As with the studies on humans, the studies on animals have reported an impairment in learning and memory prorcesses among the fluoride-treated groups.
      6) The animal studies have also documented considerable evidence of direct toxic effects of fluoride on brain tissue, even at levels as low as 1 ppm fluoride in water (Varner 1998). These effects include:– reduction in nicotinic acetylcholine receptors;– reduction in lipid content;– impaired anti-oxidant defense systems;– damage to the hippocampus;– damage to the purkinje cells; — increased uptake of aluminum; — formation of beta-amyloid plaques (the classic brain abnormality in Alzheimer’s disease); — exacerbation of lesions induced by iodine deficiency; and — accumulation of fluoride in the pineal gland.

I actually buy Toms “Fluoride free” toothpaste. It actually keeps my teeth white and shiny. The Nazi’s gave the Jews fluoride in their drinking water for the same situation. Affects the brain and thinking. The article is not bs. You can’t deny proven science.

tom’s is owned by colgate palmolive. there are 101 other homeopathic and organic brands which aren’t megacorporate. i can suggest some if you want. but you are right about avoiding fluoride.

  9. Europe and US did studies on IQs and lead absorption on 400,000 kids.  No one pays attention to those that revealed lower IQs before China’s 26 studies.
or Dr Phyllis Mullenix who found that all male mice babies were born with ADD…she was fired, her exciting computer program revolutionizing toxicology destroyed, her huge grants cancelled.
Fluoride was used to make the A-bomb and won WWII.   It can do no harm so the government cant be sued by damaged workers who didn’t know what they were making and farmers who lost their peach orchards and animals overnight.  You still can sue anyone and labs don’t test your body to see how much fluoride it is storing up.
