From PJ O’Rourke’s book PARLIAMENT OF WHORES:

When you look at the Republicans you see the scum off the top of business. When you look at the Democrats you see the scum off the top of politics. Personally, I prefer business. A businessman will steal from you directly instead of getting the IRS to do it for him. And when Republicans ruin the environment, destroy the supply of affordable housing, and wreck the industrial infrastructure, at least they make a buck off it. The Democrats just do these things for fun.

Democrats are also the party of government activism, the party that says government can make you richer, smarter, taller and get the chickweed out of your lawn. Republicans are the party that says government doesn’t work, and then they get elected and prove it.

      Pure, unadulterated bullshit.

Well, PJ O’Rourke is the very model of a modern mediocrity, so I agree with you there.

But I see the issue as a distinction without (much of) a difference:

Republicans:  Completely sold out to Mammon, but okay with that.  Never bother to hide the fact.

Democrats:  Know just enough about what a soul should look like to fake having one.

I find it endlessly fascinating that Democrats have enough wherewithal to recognize the existence of soul, and yet go out of their way to destroy it with incompetent policy execution.  Whereas Republicans are utterly confused about the notion of morality (e.g., should it REALLY depend on understanding of the godhead as an agent of material creation?), they do at least follow through with their stated policies with a vicious rigour.

It’s like America was given a multiple choice test and chose the single worst, most incorrect answer.

It’s more like it was a trick question with multiple choice answers but you’re supposed to write in the correct one.

Left/Right paradigm.  So 2008.  Leave them to it. You are *more* than that.

Time to send Fonzi back to Milwaukee and pretend the shark didn’t exist.  There’s really nothing edgy about yet another loudmouthed smartass.

    • Liam_McGonagle

Well, everyone’s got to start somewhere.  Call it “juvenalia”.

Hopefully he looks at the comments and finds enough room deep down in there to say to himself, “Well, David Howe may be an *sshole, but he’s got a point.  There’s nothing particularly new or challenging about the content or presentation of this message.  Time for me to do a little homework.”

Nobody should be judged on freshman or experimental efforts.  It gets to be more of a problem if there’s no development.

everyone should be judged always.  and quit blaming the victim.  I was a victim of a stupid rant.  where’s your empathy, brother?
