Global Warming Costs $1.2 Trillion Per Year, 1.6% Of World GDP

US Navy 071120-M-8966H-005 An aerial view over southern Bangladesh reveals extensive flooding as a result of Cyclone SidrThe bill is only going to go up, methinks. From The Guardian:

Climate change is already contributing to the deaths of nearly 400,000 people a year and costing the world more than $1.2 trillion, wiping 1.6% annually from global GDP, according to a new study.

The impacts are being felt most keenly in developing countries, according to the research, where damage to agricultural production from extreme weather linked to climate change is contributing to deaths from malnutrition, poverty and their associated diseases.

Air pollution caused by the use of fossil fuels is also separately contributing to the deaths of at least 4.5m people a year, the report found.

The 331-page study, entitled Climate Vulnerability Monitor: A Guide to the Cold Calculus of A Hot Planet and published on Wednesday, was carried out by the DARA group, a non-governmental organisation based in Europe, and the Climate Vulnerable Forum. It was written by more than 50 scientists, economists and policy experts, and commissioned by 20 governments.

By 2030, the researchers estimate, the cost of climate change and air pollution combined will rise to 3.2% of global GDP, with the world’s least developed countries forecast to bear the brunt, suffering losses of up to 11% of their GDP…

Done by the Climate Vulnerable Forum. Sounds unbiased to me (sarcasm)

As for it being commissioned, many reports which are commissioned tend to find what they were commissioned to find. Whether it’s confirmation bias, or not wanting to bite the hand that feeds them, when I read something basically finds something beneficial to the group commissioning it (in this case, someone wants money and lots of it, to stop climate change), I’m suspicious of its impartiality.

Even if some governments ( and yes, most governments are EVIL, just like us ) have interests in this report, it doesn’t make it necessarily less credible. Just look outside. And inside. Selfishness.

Stop climate change ? We can’t stop climate change. It’s an ever-going process of the Earth itself.

Of course, we have a negative impact on the climate, and we seem to repeat the same negative actions again and again and again. That’s because even if people die, ideologies survive. And ideologies are what’s sustaining every society. And other things too. But with regards to ideologies, we’re slow.

We have developed amazing technology, but many people are using it to their disadvantage. We don’t use/promote some of the amazing inventions of the 20th century, because they wouldn’t be profitable in our economy.

And all these things are the results of ideologies: our current economic system based on debt, our political systems which are corrupted and have been corrupted since the birth of politics. ( probably ). And many more. Culture too is your enemy in many ways. Even our parents pass some of their regressive ideologies to us.

What’s the worst thing that our actions would lead to ( for us ) ? Destroying human civilization ? Along with many other species. All the ecosystems of the Earth will suffer, but after we’re gone, they’re gonna thrive again !

The Universe ? Our existence is negligible in it. Unless we connect ties with it. And it is easy to do that. Because the universe is in us too. Too cheesy ? I don’t think so. We’re made of the same particles the universe is made of. We share even the void.

But if we’re selfish, the universe will be selfish too. And it won’t care about us.

Not to worry, this can be fixed if we all pay our carbon tax’s, the more we pay the faster it will be all better. Now if we could only charge plants for the C02 they use up.

    • Dallas Nothing

Haha exactly. You know what else also causes many deaths? Everything else. Damn idiots wont give up on their anthropogenic global warming conspiracy theory. If NWO is a “theory” then “man made” global warming is not even CLOSE to a fact.

Shut up and pay your carbon taxes, slave.

People are so involved in something that isn’t exacty either a proven fact, or preventable. Maybe we could do something about a real issue? Bloodbath in the middle east, ALL started by the usa holes. Actually havent heard much from old al gore since climategate, seemed to shut his ass up…

Isn’t that about the number of people killed by Der Homeland’s peacekeepers each year?

    Climate Change ate my homework.

I had a backup of mine but a CME wiped it out.

There’s a lot of wishful thinking going around these days.

      And a lot of denial.

The climate will change, its a force that is greater than us right now. What we can do is apply innovative engineering to protect our fragile bodies and take care of things in the microcosm. Engineers of days past didn’t take many variables into account due to their lack of information and shear ignorance. The problem I find these days is that engineers work for short term profit and not for humanities collaborative welfare . Every tornado season I cringe and watch in awe as houses are destroyed and lives taken, still people  build the same way as they do in areas with low risk of tornadoes, when obvious simple design changes could at least save lives if not structures, so much for a building codes. I see structures as living things too because it takes life energy aka hard work and lots of time to build one, they are our turtle shells, an extension of our bodies; its like losing a very important limb that can slowly regrow but not without the help of many, which in my opinion have their own lives to tend to . There is money to be made in rebuilding these houses of cards every year and it seems the laws that are in place to dictate how people can and cant  make money are bias to these contractors. Until humanity stops fucking it self over, evil bastards will be hoarding money under the guise of saviors and Good Samaritans.

You guys are obviously not educated. Plants oxidize CO2 and store it for us preventing it from staying in the air through photosynthesis. It is not a conspiracy CO2 as a molecule raises the temp. of air when added to oxygen and nitrogen which is what our atmosphere is made out of. I am against the 8.8 billion the US spent in 2010 on RnD, however, this global warming is happening and can’t be reversed.
