‘Tis the Season (for Election Season Propaganda)

With election season in full swing it looks like the perfect time for some heavy-handed and poorly executed right-wing propaganda extolling the virtues of religious freedom. (You know, as long as you pick the right religion.) Last Ounce of Courage is the story of a Harley-riding small town mayor named Bob Revere (Revere! Get it? Get it?) standing up for the rights of a horrifically “persecuted” majority religion.

Watching the trailer leaves me with a couple of questions: First, how stupid do the producers think the public is that it won’t see Last Ounce of Courage for the ham-fisted propaganda it really is? Second, in this day and age of Koch brothers super money could they not even get enough funding for Kirk Cameron?

, , ,

  • Liam_McGonagle

” . . . could they not even get enough funding for Kirk Cameron?”

Cuddemsomeslackhere, will ya?  At least they went to the bother of getting a real, doughy white guy.  They could have done what the Romney people did and just shove in some unconvincingly CGI’d animation from a slave camp in South Korea.

  • Anarchy Pony

Koch don’t care about jesus, just money.

    • Hugh S. Iscariot

See?  The fact that even Jesus turned down the lead for this film proves the old stereotype of Jews being all about the money is a lie.

but there is always money in religion

Well then I guess they aren’t being good randroids and pursuing their rational self interest hard enough.

  • kowalityjesus

You guys are being pretty hard on something that aspires to be a B movie.  Jesus is not a bad guy.  These people are convicted to inspire others to return to the values America grew up on.  It is simpy and banal, but its the vehicle through which they can move the hearts and minds of America’s rural populace.  Nobody cares or knows that the soldiers are just tools for perpetuating the military-industrial stranglehold on America.  I agree with Mr McGonagle, give them a break.  That being the secular apologists viewpoint, let me prepare my best sacred evangelical assertion:

This whole facade of jaded, sophisticated, worldly inert-net conoisseur-ship is bringing every one of your souls to hell in a handbasket.  Jesus lives.  Demons inhabit and surround your body.  Repent by the name of Jesus Christ or you will taste hellfire the second your soul leaves your body.  You have been warned multiple times and each event of your disregarding is a mark of guilt against your eternal fate.

    • Calypso_1

does hellfire taste like raspberry sorbet?

            ummm brimstone.

          • Calypso_1

I’m beginning to see where some of the flaws in your theory of damnation lie.
Brimstone, a historical name for sulfur, melts at approx 115° C, while ‘lava’  ie molten rock does not begin to melt until around 700° C.  Brimstone would have completely sublimated to a gas at this temp.  While this might indeed produce an infernal stench I believe it warrants a rethinking of the physical foundations of your infernal realms.

    • Anarchy Pony

By not raiding enemy settlements and testing your merit in battle, you are at great risk of not making into the Hall of the Gods, and joining them in battle at Ragnorak.

      • kowalityjesus

Peace/salvation does not come from these worldly pursuits.  Just meaningless loot.

I have read the fiery gospel writ in burnished rows of steel:
“As ye deal with my contemners, so with you my grace shall deal
Let the Hero, born of woman, crush the serpent with his heel.
        Our God is marching on.”

enjoy your stay… Only God can decide who will taste heaven and who is damned to hell.  It has been a profound question in Christianity (one that wracked the brain of St Augustine) for as long as it has existed.

        • Calypso_1

It’s not a very profound question.

Your entire religion is nothing more than a thinly veiled threat against your brethren. If you were in the middle east right now you would be making the same threats in the name of the same Sumerian War Demon but call him by the name of Allah instead of Yahweh.

wow what a quote!  I can only speculate that he is referring to the Church.  Jefferson was a Freemason, and they are, at the highest echelons, a Satanic organization.  Why would YOU say that Christianity is perverse?  It seems pretty logical and virtuous, the golden rule, forgiveness, charity, love, compassion…anything the matter with that?

        • http://twitter.com/jasonpaulhayes jasonpaulhayes

Jefferson was warning his fellow free thinking democratic reformers in this nation about people like yourself who wish to dissolve our Union.

The United States was founded in the Western Esoteric Tradition not Christianity,  Satanism or any other specific religion … although being an organization that welcomes people of all faiths, it’s certainly possible there are Satanists within the ranks of the Masonic Order. Being that Satanism promotes the idea that you should do what you choose and harm none in the process it appeals to the founding traditions of this nation .. a nation founded upon the ruins that a perverted ideology, guns, germs and steel had left from Sea to shining Sea.

“Love thy Enemy” actually means “Kill your Brother”. “Treat others the way you would want to be treated” when perverted by men like yourself mean that you must hold others to the flames and impose the rules and punishments of Church Law. The classic role of the Church as a tax free Charitable Organization providing Social Services has no place in a modern thinking society that has a tradition of Separation of Church and State, it remains as a way to circumnavigate that Separation today.

Very interesting information.  I would be interested if you had a source expressing the idea that the United States was founded on Western Esotericism.  You are right in saying that The Constitution does not hold expressly Christian ideals, but wrong in believing that Christians desire for the dissolution of the Union, I have no notion of where you got that idea.
I do not propose a return to Church Law.  I only propose to highlight the fate that awaits certain damnable attitudes and activities.  Going to church is a great way to find out about the ideals of God.  I would have people do what they will, but accept the consequences.  Your assertion that the Church fulfills no role in a modern thinking society is moderately absurd.  I am a thinking person but no rational explanation can express why I believe the things I do.  Some things are beyond words, numinous, ineffable.  I am free to believe as I please, and I am free to proselytize as I please.  I remind you that it is out of compassion that I rebuke others, that they might be of higher standing in the eyes of God.

I would also remind you that next to Satan can only be slavery.  There is no reward but to have authority over those under you.  Next to God the reward is in itself; to be at one with HE who has created your world and your self and live according to the most ideal “operating system” designed expressly for your purpose.

You don’t fully understand the implications of what you’re saying. You’ve had the shepherds blood soaked, woolen shroud pulled tight over your eyes.

You’ve been conditioned to never see that your religion is the very source of “Evil” you’ve always been looking for. It’s what you’ve been trained to go out looking for and to defeat everywhere but in your own heart and mind.

the other day I was trying to explain Christianity
    to some Chinese friends
because they had asked me to explain what a Mormon was
you shoulda seen the perplex looks on their faces

yeah there’s god and he got pissed at his creation
he tried to kill us, but then decided to kill himself instead
but first he became a man so he could kill himself
but once he was dead we were pardon from our sins
by the god who tried to kill us
but if we don’t believe his preposterous story
he will have us tortured forever in a lake of fire
by angle he lost a bet with
about humans being able to withstand torture

the Mormons believe the same stuff
but with even wackier stuff because
and then I have to tell’em the whole Mormon story

    and their like… WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

you are either very uninformed or would rather make things up than tell the truth, because that is the worst misrepresentation of the story of Jesus’s life and death that I have ever heard.  No wonder why the Chinese didn’t get it (they can’t find out in their homeland because Christianity is illegal).

Oh I see Noah’s flood wiped out all the lousy people that lived for 1000 years, then God changed the length of a human lifespan to closer to what we have today.
God so LOVED the world and mankind that he sent his only begotten son to live and die among us.  He did withstand persecution and die in fulfillment of the scriptures, which Judas regarded as disregarding his own welfare (which I assume you would take the opinion of).

Obviously you have never heard the doctrine of “baptism of desire” which is a compromise pointing to the idea that those who are not baptised in the holy name, are still spared eternal damnation if they have lived a life which resembles that which Jesus taught.

Yes Mormons, though a very virtuous and stoic people, have a rather strange set of scriptures which they must disallow any of their followers from researching the origins of.  Not so with Catholicism.

        no, it’s not

but I get a sense that it’s the socialization she digs
more than Jebus stuff, which she really doesn’t understand

I spent about 15 years as a fundy christian
so I’m hip to your rap & have read the bible more than once

when the story gets told without the usual reverant veneer
        it sounds bizarre
        because it is
