Lake Karachay: The Most Toxic Place On Earth

Basement Geographer on a lake in the Russian mountains which may be the single most concentrated spot of environmental desecration:

Imagine a lake so polluted and contaminated that spending just an hour on its shores would result in certain death, and the only way seen fit to deal with it is to fill the entire water body with concrete blocks to keep the toxic soil underneath from moving onshore. That lake is Lake Karachay in Russia’s Chelyabinsk Oblast, and it is considered by many to be the most polluted place on the planet.

Lake Karachay lies within the Mayak Production Association, one of Russia’s largest and oldest nuclear facilities and a major source of plutonium during the Soviet era. Built immediately following World War II, Mayak has been the site of numerous nuclear-related accidents throughout its history, some approaching the size of the Chernobyl meltdown but far more concentrated.

Statistics reveal that by the 1990s, there had been a 21% increase in the incidences of cancer, a 25% increase in birth defects, a 41% increase in leukaemia, and a rendering of 50% of the population of child bearing age sterile in the Mayak region. Of the 40 villages on the river downstream from Mayak, 24 relied upon it for water; 23 of those villages had to be evacuated. One village, Metlino, was found to have 65% of residents suffering from chronic radiation sickness, and workers at the plutonium plant reported the same.

yeah, but lake-front property is a really good deal right now
so there’s some good news too

Also if the lake glows, free night light.

How is it a good deal? It endangers someone’s health.

And here I thought the most polluted place on the planet was Charlie Sheen’s liver.

    Enriched uranium is fissioned for
plutonium, a man made humanocidal, unknown on earth until 1945, a
component of nuclear bombs. US.A. reactors store up to four times
their design capacities of radioactive waste as we speak, and with
the Yucca Mountain project on hold, the accumulation continues. This
may be America’s largest “Hidden Deficit” and the end of
the American Dollar’s real value. Truth is Ingenious American
Scientists had a “better way” using Thorium fission for
nuclear heat generation, but American politicians in the 1990′s chose
enriched uranium for the bomb making potential.
http://www.theoildrum.com/node/4971 tells of this. Google Thorium, China
and/or LFTR reactors for more information. Russian lake in this
article is in fact leaking into Northern then Southern oceans and
must be controlled for its long term environmental dangers and is
not! Much as the American, “Solution to pollution is dilution”,
seems viable, with radio-active poisons, it is not as they
bio-accumulate and bio-concentrate in oceans – even some of the
dissolved then diluted radioactive wastes from Fuckoshima have shown
up in Tuna fish of U.S. West Coast already, and South Korea will not
buy Japanese fish of kelp due to radioactive poisons found
    bio-accumulated in them.

    It’s a damned shame!

we will need new nuclear reactors to produce electricity, simple as that.  thorium and new nuclear technologies where the fuel can be handled by hand and more or less “burns up” and can be derived from existing uranium stockpiles–no more mining needed.  further those next generation reactors, which could be available by around 2030, are by design cannot melt down or pose the danger of radioactive leaks.
why is south africa ahead of the usa in developing this technology?  oil, gas and coal interests?  just because i don’t believe in conspiracies doesn’t mean they don’t exist.   i didn’t believe the auto industry killed off the electric trolleys but they did.
