Growth Rate Of Police Officers Significantly Higher Than Population Growth

Interesting to consider cops as a demographic group. Information Liberation reports:

The Bureau of Justice Statistics has released a report demonstrating the growth of police in the United States. Between 1992 and 2008 the numbers of police grew by 25 percent. In 2008 there were 705,000 full-time sworn officers employed in the United States. The number was 564,000 in 1992. This represents an annual growth rate of 1.6 percent, which exceeds the 1.2 percent population growth rate in the United States, according to the survey.

Law enforcement grew its ranks despite a significant decline in crime [which] fell to an all-time low in 2011. Despite the decline, police departments around the country are rapidly transforming into paramilitary organizations. Forbes reported last year that the Department of Homeland Security granted local cops $3 billion that was spent on “necessary tools” like BearCats and armored personnel vehicles.

      No, but with the technology they wield and the fact that a lot of blooded combat vets are making up their numbers will make it a uphill fight. Fighting the cops today would be worse than the Rebels fighting the Union during the civil war. Imagine Sherman with drones.

        It wouldn’t even be close.

        They’re laughably outnumbered and outgunned.

        But it doesn’t ever need to come to that because the cops aren’t the problem, just a symptom.

        The cops just work for the people who are the problem. Those are the people that need to be dealt with.

          Outgunned? Not by a long shot.

            The police don’t have superior equipment.

            They just don’t.

            As far as training goes, they’re pretty good at using overwhelming force on an unsuspecting target, I’ll grant you that.

            But otherwise they’re in an untenable tactical position.

            I would expect that 100 homeless bums storming the gates of a local police station would quickly become chunks of 100 bums on the street outside the gates of the local police station.

            1 homeless bum promised a case of beer and a bag of dope for parking a Ryder truck next to the local police station, leads to chunks of something else.

            But like I said, it never needs to be that way. The cops aren’t the problem, they’re barely even an obstacle.

            The problem is the criminal business class in this country. Ideally, that’s who needs to be arrested and put in prison.

            I always urge caution when underestimating a potential opponent. You have some valid points, but the important thing that you said is that the cops aren’t the problem-it’s the ruling class and its bottomless greed. There will always be soldiers that will commit atrocities on order from their superiors. You have to cut that head off. Most police that I have known personally see themselves as knights making the world safe and defending the weak. Its hard to reconcile this self image with the blatant video evidence, but knights weren’t really good guys either, were they?

            Sure. But if it really is that easy, which it sort of is if you’re willing to die yourself, why doesn’t it happen occasionally? (although I wonder if you’ve been inside many police stations. They really are well designed for those contingencies, unless you’re talking about a REALLY big fucking boom)

            1. Your local cop shop is a pawn in the Homeland occupation force.So you take one out. Big deal. Now the real superstars have carte blanche to do whatever it takes to track down anyone who ever knew anyone involved and ghost them. And the big dogs’ buildings are far more secure. You’re not going to pull a truck bomb up into CIA headquarters in Langley unless they want you to.

            2.Those stations completely surveilled, including the surrounding area. The bum who took the gig will almost certainly have a mug shot on file; cue facial recognition software. He’ll be in custody and squeal in a hurry. That’s why the kinds of people who have the connections and ability to pull that off, namely organized criminal gangs, choose instead to hunker down, try to stay below radar, and rake in the cash while they can to live their version of the American Dream.

            3. You can’t just look at firepower. The cops (and especially Feds of all the alphabet soup varieties) have an intelligence gathering superstructure that is completely unprecedented in human history.

            I know it seems like it would be just so easy to square off with the cops in asymmetrical warfare. I really wish it was. But it’s just not.

            If it was, would the FBI have to find a patsy and stage terror attacks themselves every so often just to keep their budgets growing?

            First you need some sort of collective will to do it. We certainly don’t lack for people on the verge of going postal, but they shoot up their workplace or a local McDonald’s. Even professional outlaws who think little more of murder than they do of waking up in the morning spend their time fighting each other rather than the cops.

            Then there’s the demographic problem. If you look at historical examples of civilian uprisings that don’t get successfully and brutally put down, they all have a huge surplus of disgruntled young men whose existence and prospects are so grim that they’re willing to break off and form their own society or die trying. We don’t have that in any nation in the world that has a say in running things. You also usually need a disgruntled army or police force, so…

            But let’s say for argument’s sake a group of committed people did manage to detonate a few IEDs in front of cop shops at points around the country. Say they also manage to snipe a handful more.

            What do you think the reaction would be? The gloves would come off of this hiding-in-plain-sight, Brave New World kind of police state and you’d find out what living in i1984-5G looks like in a hurry.

            And as for arresting the scumbags who own and run this world, any same society would round them up en masse and put their heads on spikes in front of the Bull on Wall St. and all top government buildings. But they own the best goon squads along with everything else; so that’s not gonna happen.

            That’s not to say the conditions necessary for something like that will never occur in the future. But barring some global environmental catastrophe to set the stage, none of us will live to see it.

            I wish I was wrong. But I’m not.

            I live around cops and I see their antics. I see how they bully their neighbors. i have cops as friends and I go to their private cop parties. Cops are ignorant for the most part. The smart ones are evil but, they aren’t wise. They live a frat boy/cowboy style life. They are so drunk on power that, they underestimate their opponents. it would be easy to overwhelm them….and they’re only good shots with a pistol. That’s only good at close range.

            they practice killing ppl. we have morals so we just kill deer. i guess you guys didn’t see waco. Less than a hundred guns outgunned all of those federal agencies. The Christian Davidians committed suicide when they let them walk away with their empty guns. The cops just came back and burned the place down.

    Private security is growing even faster than public-sector police. While a rational elite would realize that paying taxes to maintain the service base and paying more for labor is cheaper than a breakdown of public order in the long run, they don’t think of the long run. Before the Roman Empire fell, the wealthy who bought government had soothsayers on payroll who would tell them that all would always be well. Now they hire PR experts and academics who will give them the good news which is only kind they want to hear.

    And no, this won’t save them, either. Not a problem for me except that we’ll go down the drain first.

    when you legalize stealing a 50 year old house for a 3 week old plant you can make a lot of money for the police state. There are whole dept budgets financed by stealing homes under the guise of a war on drugs. They need someone to police the communities while the others are out shopping.
