It is an interesting story, although with a rather melodramatic and anti-European animation. It reminds me of the story of the explorer de Vaca, which I think is quite a bit more interesting.

He was shipwrecked in Florida in 1528 and after whittling down the 300 in his ranks from disease and starvation, he wandered from tribe to tribe around the gulf of Mexico and American southwest spending time as a slave and also accumulating a following as a faith-healer, using sections he remembered of the Catholic Mass as incantations. When he finally wandered into Mexico City in 1536, he disapproved of the treatment of the natives by the conquistadores.

After he returned to Spain and wrote the account of his travels, he wanted to be part of an expedition to explore Mexican territory and convert natives, but unfortunately was not given the appointment, which was instead given to a military commander who contributed further to the brutal reputation of Spain in the New World.
