Tea Party Activists Boycott Fox News for Being ‘Too Liberal’

What is this “liberal” people speak of? David Freelander writes at the Daily Beast:

“I am having withdrawal. I do like Fox News,” said Kevin Avard, a former state lawmaker in New Hampshire who is participating in the boycott. “I have been going to CNN, and to Headline News just to get some kind of fix. I usually probably only watch them once or twice a year.”

Hjerlied said that “If I want news, I go to Breitbart News and Drudge and I can find all the news I need, very quickly,” and after the first boycott, says he may have “kicked the habit” for good.

“I used to have it on all day long, and I probably watched maybe six hours last week,” he said. “The more I looked at it, I have come to the conclusion that Fox is not as fair and balanced as I thought. They shade the truth also.”

Donnie Farner, 48, works as a chimney sweep in central Pennsylvania and runs a website, Proud Conservative, which sells right-leaning memorabilia like “Liberals Are Friggin Idiots” T-shirts and bumper stickers which read “Ten Out of Ten Terrorists Recommend Voting Democrat.”

He said staying away from Fox News, and in particular its website, is harder than he realized.

“It is honestly because Fox is everywhere. If you are on Twitter, you click on a link, chances are it might go through Mediaite or Drudge, but it ends up at Fox because Fox originated the story.”

He quickly clicks away, instead relying on Glenn Beck’s website The Blaze to stay informed.

“The more I research into Fox—I saw that they donate more to Democratic candidates than conservative or Republican candidates—I was like holy cow! Maybe they are just trying to snatch our pockets. Maybe they are just talking the talk, because it sure doesn’t look like they are walking the walk.”

Among the demands the protesters have is that Fox News “be the right-wing CBS News: to break stories, to break information, and to do what news organizations have always done with such stories: break politicians,” that the network have at least one segment on Benghazi every night on two of its prime-time shows; that Fox similarly devote investigative resources to discovering the truth of Obama’s birth certificate; and that the network cease striving to be “fair and balanced.”

“We need Fox to turn right,” said Hjerlied. “We think this is a coverup and Fox is aiding and abetting it. This is the way Hitler started taking over Germany, by managing and manipulating the news media.”

  1. lol… there’s one person at the tea party rally in the picture.

    • Yeah, and he looks like a denizen of Walmart. The only thing missing is the electric scooter with his fat ass spilling over the seat.
Amazing that these mouth-breathers find the fascist propaganda chanel “too liberal.” Wow, just fucking wow. Not that anything else coming from the LAMESTREAM media is much better, but at least the others make the attempt to cover up their propaganda with the pretence of “objectivity.”

      • They are literally a dying breed. I have this theory that the only people who took it seriously are the ones duped by the people who flipped the bill. Whom of course are the real benefactors of the seething stupid which is the tea party. They’ve done so well with their thought virus that their revenants still gnash their maws like the maggots that they are.

        • Exactly.
Also, thanks. I just learned a new word, “revenants.” It is yet another fitting term for the delluded masses, along with zombies, sheeple, rubes, mouth-breathers, knuckle draggers, etc.

          • you are welcome.

          • In some vampire stories, a revenant is a bloodthirsty and mindless underling. The best modern example is the creature in the pit of the first Blade film. I believe he is friends with one of the characters.

  2. “Hjerlied said that “if I want news, I go to Breitbart News and Drudge and I can find all the news I need, very quickly.”

A problem on all sides. Doesn’t matter whether it’s Drudge, DailyKos, Reason, or Common Dreams. Extreme skepticism of mainstream/corporate media is completely rational. What isn’t rational is turning instead to websites that reinforce your worldview, either by manipulation or exclusion of news. It’s not the news you need–it’s the news you want. Reading the news you want is easy and great for your ego, but it makes you stupid and keeps you there.

    • Adam Curtis (‘The Century of the Self’ et al) has a relatively recent blog post exploring how we got to this point, looking at the Texas oil tycoon H.L Hunt, who:

‘invented a new form of television journalism [which] pretended to be objective and balanced but in fact it was hard core right-wing propaganda. It was way ahead of its time because, in its fake neutrality, it prefigured the rise of the ultraconservative right-wing media of the 1990s – like Fox News, with its copyrighted slogan, “Fair and Balanced”.’

Hunt poured money into radio, TV and other avenues, with a preference for titles (‘Educational Facts League’ / ‘Facts Forum’) proclaiming objectivity, but presenting the solution to every dilemma as some combination of minimising government interference in business activity and maximising it in any sphere seen as a threat to those interests.

Curtis goes on to show that Hunt’s influence was profound not only on the right, but on the left as well, via Jack Ruby who was arrested in possession of transcripts from one of Hunt’s radio shows and the phone number of one of Hunt’s sons (another of whom ran the infamous full-page ads in the Dallas Morning Herald on the morning of the assassination). Curtis is agnostic on the point of any actual involvement or influence, but traces the way these facts were seized upon by the eager left:

‘Underlying this is a message that says these hidden forces in America will never allow you to know the truth. Which means that what you are told by the media may be a lie. That you are being manipulated.

Just as H. L. Hunt himself was gnawing away at the idea of objectivity and truth through his own TV programmes, so too were the left also using a demonic caricature of H L Hunt to do the very same thing. He and other shadowy figures, the left said, will never let you know the truth.’

    • You are making a false equivalence. “all sides” are not equally faulty and equally evil.

      • landydavis | Mar 26, 2013 at 7:07 am |

“degrees” of evil is actually the false distinction. Can you get that?

        • No, stealing a penny is not as evil as raping a child.

          • landydavis | Mar 26, 2013 at 2:02 pm |

what is evil and why steal or rape as act of evil and who edecides what quantity an quality makes some worse evil.. (that is funny to say “worse evil” shows how silly) how many pennies is as evil? the ego makes arbitrary distinctions exactly to maintain superiority. .and why to superior but to dictate….dictate what you like?

          • I disagree.

          • landydavis | Mar 27, 2013 at 6:49 am |

try this. are you confusing what is anti social or illegal with what is evil? you are yes. all would agree as an act of anti social behaviour rape is worse….but as an act of evil..no their is not a distinction…as an act of evil coming crom the same sour e of destructive intent and depravity and great borrible fear and malevolence. .then itbis evil wbich has no shade or color and degree of “worseness” and which may both steal pennies and rape…or corrupt or whatever at ajy moment..evil is not a singular act…you do get this

          • I believe that as acts of evil there is a distinction. There are shades of depravity, shades of fear, and shades of destructive intent. I disagree with what you’re saying.

        • Can I? I suppose I can. Comparing two things that are not alike (such as CBS News and Breitbart) is a false equilvance.

Actually, I’m talking out of my butt because I don’t know what the hell you’re talking about.

      • Not what I was doing. I totally agree with you.

Ouroborous is swallowing its tail. We are going over the wingnut event horizon.

I’d say strap yourself in, but only pinko hippy fags use seat belts.

Seat belts impede my freedom to be sucked out into the vacuum and compressed into a singularity!

not any funnier than people taking any media outlet seriously
like Fox is somehow better or worse
than any other of those lying shills

    • Fox is worse. Not sure if CNN actually lies, but Fox certainly does. Not the same.

      • BuzzCoastin | Mar 26, 2013 at 6:31 am |

        > Not sure if CNN actually lies

if you think for even a second
that there is any “truth” in what is being spewed forth by MEDIA
        then you drank the kewlaid

        • So you’re saying that every single thing in the news is false? I agree that they all lie, but I’m not sure that all they do is lie.

          • KeepItToYourself | Mar 26, 2013 at 12:34 pm |

It doesn’t really matter how much they lie, the fact they lie at all (as opposed to making honest mistakes) bodes ill for any free society.

          • What’s a “free society?”

          • KeepItToYourself | Mar 26, 2013 at 1:52 pm |

            Seemingly, a “pipe dream”.

          • BuzzCoastin | Mar 26, 2013 at 7:40 pm |

it’s a psyop perpetrated by Homeland news

          • BuzzCoastin | Mar 26, 2013 at 7:39 pm |

everything called news is spun & processed goods
(think invasion of Iraq et al)

take a gander at the Conan piece here from last week
“You don’t need us to to tell you…”

sure, every now and the the “truth” has to used
as a base for the spin
            the media is the massage

        • Painting with a mighty broad brush, aren’t you? Not all media is the same, not all media is propaganda. You have to make judgements on the individual coverage. Much of it is quite good. Dismissing all media seems just a little bit nutty.

          • BuzzCoastin | Mar 26, 2013 at 8:34 pm |

            > Dismissing all media seems just a little bit nutty.

my friends at Psyop Battalion #9 are applauding your statement
they don’t want you to buy into everything
that’s why they create multi-branded media
so you can pick and choose your propaganda

NEWS is about dumbing down the sheeple
            and selling bling-bing
            that’s all it is

          • that’s quite an array of bad faith, personal insults, and epistemic closure. good work

          • BuzzCoastin | Mar 31, 2013 at 3:11 am |

a pot calling the kettle black
            how typical

          • funny how it all comes back to you, isn’t it?

      • landydavis | Mar 26, 2013 at 7:15 am |

what is the difference between your contempt for the backwards right and their contempt for the backwards you? All of you want control and certainty and so will never have either…peas in a pod….mutually consenting combatants in futility….no peace

        • not at all. that’s a very cynical and defeatist point of view. If you really feel that way, maybe you can explain how things often change for the better. Civil Rights, for example. Things are infinitely better in every possible way over 40 years ago. One “side” – the just side – won. The other “side” – the unjust side – lost. Control fell to one party and there is no mutual combat to speak of.

          I don’t agree that I’m backwards, incidentally.

          • landydavis | Mar 26, 2013 at 8:57 pm |

Now there sometimes is fact. in that sense you have , what you would call “lied” to sell your agenda It is a fact that things are not infinitely better in every way…start with incarceration rates of young black males..just for one (do black nationalist think what happened was good? was it divid le and conquer or was real equality offered?). and this is how it goes when you have an agenda and you do. You will always find a fight a lie and a hard sell on all sides and there will always be an oppressor but the agendized have a preferance of oppressor..their preference…one they wish to impose on others. czar or stalin..emperor or atom bomb ..cheney or saddam…I will tll you if that is the ground of your reality then there is a law…the biggest dog eats..for awhile then the next and next..still always a dog mind you.. get it yet? no difference all oppressors all righteous.

          • wow. that’s some deep deflection. holy shit. You just hate facts, don’t you? Bitter, cynical…whatever.

If true this remains unsurprising. FOX is a corporation presenting a product with an image designed to appeal to certain target consumers.
