European Union To Ban Pesticides Linked To Mass Bee Deaths

bee deaths

Via the BBC:

The European Commission will restrict the use of pesticides linked to bee deaths by researchers, despite a split among EU states on the issue. Neonicotinoid chemicals in pesticides are believed to harm bees and the European Commission says they should be restricted to crops not attractive to bees and other pollinators.

There is great concern across Europe about the collapse of bee populations. A report published by the European Food Safety Agency (EFSA) in January concluded that the pesticides posed a “high acute risk” to pollinators, including honeybees.

There was ferocious lobbying both for and against in the run-up to Monday’s vote. Nearly three million signatures were collected in support of a ban. Chemical companies and pesticide manufacturers have been lobbying hard – they argue that the science is inconclusive, and that a ban would harm food production.

They banned 2 of the 121 pesticides found in honeybee hives.

    While
those two are implicated and this is probably the right move, it’s also
probably not the magic bullet. We haven’t conclusively determined the
cause of CCD yet. An article this week in the LA Times fingers high
fructose corn syrup as a factor and notes:

    “A
study in 2010 found evidence of 121 pesticides in honeybee hives,
including compounds used to fight off bee mites and a fungicide widely
    used in agriculture.

    Pesticides
are among the factors believed to be linked to colony collapse
disorder, which has wiped out entire colonies of commercial bees since
about 2006. Scientists have identified several factors in the collapse,
including parasites, microbial pathogens, pesticides, nutrition and
    beekeeping practices.

    “People
would love to have the one solution, but the problems is it really does
seem like it’s a combination of factors,” Berenbaum said. But a
compromised immune system, she added, could complicate all of the
    identified factors.”

eventually they’ll weigh enough to realize
it’s okay to just let people die
      or
      get off the planet
of course food production will be harmed
no matter what anyone does food production will be harmed
and i plan on eating a slaughter resultant as a beef patty in the next hour
so let’s waste time figuring out collateral
      and let’s call that sarcasm
so we can turn the fluck around
and see that people don’t want kids
and that some people want that to say some people
      so whatever the fluck
      figure out healing food production
      and don’t have kids
      or adopt

and let’s all hemp at will

So will the US sue them under some “fair trade” treaty or another?

What’s with all you filthy alarmists? They’re gonna build robo bees. So fuck the bees, kill those buzzy little bastards! Usher in the era of the entirely artificial food cycle. No interference from that slut nature! ROBO BEES! TECHNOBABBLE!
