Glowing Plants Coming to a Streetlamp Near You?

A night sky lit only by stars and glowing plants sounds pretty awesome, but I can’t believe that there wouldn’t be unforeseen consequences. I’d hate to have to explain to our great grandchildren that they’re living in a world full of glowing, genetically polluted foodstuffs because our generation thought it sounded cool at the time.

Yeah, great lets release an untested GMO into the wild with unforeseeable side effects. Really, its fine you guys Monsanto does it all the time and they know what thiy’re doing.

In the rush to turn genetics research into a commodity, people gloss over the fact that we still don’t understand it very well at the individual organism level and don’t understand it at all at the larger ecological level.

Couple that with production of technology of dubious value. This is a good example of producing something out of novelty, which has no inherent value. A lot of GMO crops are similar: you can make a round-up ready crop, for instance, which is great for a few years until one of the things we have long observed about biology pops up – other things develop resistance to round-up.

The more stuff like this that people play with, the more exposure & downside risk that could ultimately lead to major problems there is.

  3. The plant they are making glow, the arabidopsis, won’t be able to survive in nature as it uses a lot of it’s adaptive energy on glowing. Will only survive with human care.

  5. I like his presumption that it’s okay to unilaterally change the natural landscape for everyone.
