How To Identify And Protect Yourself From Psychopaths

Vinny Eastwood and Thomas Sheridan together here, commiserating on the nature and tactics utilized by psychopaths and the best strategies for mitigation of this seemingly demonic or archontic force in human affairs.

Points raised include; “never try to out psychopath a psychopath”, the cumulative effects of government schooling (schule’ing) amounting to mass grooming for future enslavement to psychopaths, and how to elevate yourself beyond the games of those incapable of love.  With 1-4% of the population considered to be psychopathic or sociopathic; and the far reaching devastation wrought on a global scale by their pernicious influence, it is critical that the average person not possessed by this decidedly reptilian world view become aware of these often abusive and predatory aberrations and how they might prepare, cope and recover from any potential interactions with psychopaths.

My English teacher always told me that run on sentences were a good clue. Poor paragraphing and use of the semicolon could also indicate real trouble ahead. I think Kurt Vonnegut even made a rule about it.

But what care I? All rules are made to be broken.

I myself plea guilty to over-use of dashes and hyphens to emphasise contrast by a break in the cadence. Also, I have particular contempt for spelling conventions.

Probably my only real rule for weeding out *ssholes is whether I feel they’re trying to sell me something. I hate marketing and PR types.

    • echar

Some people may have learning disabilities. I think people who hold themselves higher for learning to mimic are dicks. I am not a fan of marketing either, in this instance it’s a necessary evil. Bro needs to lay down suggestion to ensure the continuation of his format.

Some food for thought here. I prefer they had more time to talk about their last point, instead of criticizing and ending it there.

Alternately, you could read The Psychopath’s Bible by Christopher S.Hyatt. Short and to the point.

THE best way to protect yourself from psychopaths is to wear a fennel head around your neck and keep in your pocket a piece of antimony wrapped in the first shearing of a ram lamb, soaked in the menses of a goat.

    • echar

will the menses of badger work? I am fresh out of goat, don’t ask.

      • Calypso_1

Partially – Psychopaths may in fact find you rather alluring in this case but you will not come to any harm as long as you remember not to whistle any show tunes.

If you were to place a turnip under your hat as well, you will find the badger bitch blood to be quite useful in warding off other ne’er-do-wells such as smelly old people and mewling brats.

If however you manage to acquire the she-badger in a suitable pre-menstrual state you will find yourself well-protected in just
        about any circumstance.

This is a serious subject, but one surrounded by a lot of sensationalism. I see two types of psychopaths. The psychopaths of the criminal underworld and the psychopaths of entrenched power. There are big parallels with these two groups and they resonate to each other and work together.

I also think a big piece of the puzzle is the so called “authoritarian personality” type. These people aren’t psychopaths but have a tendency to be drawn to psychopathic leaders. I think what ties these together is the limbic system and the amygdala-the so called reptilian brain. A fear based emotional way of reacting that short cicuits creativity.

    • Calypso_1

When we last entertained this subject the ‘sensationalism’ was one of my biggest objections to the perspective as outlaid. Thus, I addressed it in kind.

I would like to ask you now though, in your identification of these two poles, can you see the possibility of extremes that are simply mirrors of each other?

Disorders present as a spectrum. Why do you think this one has to be manifested in sub-human demigods at the pinnacles of power, be they the nether regions or heights of political systems?
Do you really believe that all of these traits, if they were to exist in an individual even in full, would by their very nature intrinsically lead primarily to persons of power?

Also, would you clarify your statement about fear-based emotional reactions. Were you applying this to psychopathy or solely to the authoritarian?

      • http://twitter.com/TedHeistman Ted Heistman

        Its sort of like this:

Crime in a way, is relative. Something might be against the law in one country and perfectly legal in another. So in a way the Psychopathic checklist is kind of suspect. Like for example where in the brain is the mechanism of “revocation of conditional release”?

But on the other hand predatory violence is a thing in and of itself and people living in civilized societies are more or less tamed and domesticated away from engaging in this as a way of life. But in certain settings, historical periods, in certain regions it may be a perfectly legitimate way of life for example among raiding pastoral nomads, Pirates, Vikings etc.

Historically you have had situations where primitive brigands conquered and came to rule advanced civilizations. They then came to occupy the warrior caste of the conquered civilization adopting a Feudal way of Life, demanding tribute and putting the conquered people to work creating complex war machines that allowed them to conquer new territories. On this large scale at the level of the State it is not considered crime but warfare, though basically the same thing. Alexander the great commented on this himself, when asked by a Pirate “what is the difference between you and I? Have we not the same occupation?” or something to that effect.

So outside of the Warrior elite of various Feudal societies, not only in middle Age Europe buy also Asia and the Middle East, even in Polynesia, and elsewhere, wherever warfare is a way of life, you have among the lower classes, the conquered people, various atavisms that manifest in criminal Gangs.

So you have parallels, between Old money Elites and the Criminal underground. One group demands taxes, the other “protection money”. But they operate the same way differing only by economy of scale.

And they work together, for example in the illegal drug trade.

        • Calypso_1

So by this perspective, psychopaths are simply a derivative evolution of the Warrior Elite?

As to Criminal Power v. ‘Legitimate’ Power – this was what I was describing as mirror images.

But fundamentally it seems to me, whether in defining ‘psychopathy’ or these ‘elites’, be there any intersection between the two, is a relationship to authority that you are describing. Namely that they find it primarily in themselves, most often, at least in its establishment, to the detriment of others.

          • http://twitter.com/TedHeistman Ted Heistman

There are different types of elites. Some people are elites by being smart, creative, artistic altruistic etc. ultimately we have aspects of a society based on these sentiments, but mixed in is the old order, that crops up again and again and is always there underneath the surface

Because alongside these other elites there are elites that are elite at organized violence, dominating other people, playing chess games in real life etc. etc. That is a class of psychopaths and I think these people exist. its not a Myth.

And the “authoritarian personality” prefers this type of leadership. Leadership in terms of absolutes, command and control etc. These people are led on the basis of the Amygdala. The Flag, militarism, goose stepping etc.

As far as primitive tribes. some were violent, others weren’t. But i believe along with Veblen, that social classes formed when warlike tribes dominated other tribes.

I think predatory people are an evolitionary variant. I don’t think our primitive hunter gatherer ancestors were all psychopaths. I think its a specialization based on human predation.

But it crops up in different areas of the Social strata.

          • Eric_D_Read

Interesting that you brought up Veblen and the pastoral nomads.

I think one could make a strong argument that, in many cases, a modern psychopath is in many ways a tribal human without a tribe.

Since tribal humans lived in an extreme “us vs them” world, there were certain standards of right and wrong that would apply to other members of the group in the same way that modern civilization expects us to apply to everyone; but anyone who was not considered “one of us” was just a piece of meat.

Take Richard “the Iceman” Kuklinski for example. In the modern world he’s a monster. But if you found yourself living in Northern Europe 1,500-2,000 years ago, you’d definitely want that guy on your team.

Yeah, he would have to have a sense of loyalty but that kind of cold brutality would be useful.

I saw Blue Velvet. What a headfuck. The things you and Ted are describing though seem to resonate with the things I was vaguely associating while watching it. You can almost see Frank’s brain and the particular way it moves and reacts to things. At first I was thinking “how is this guy not dead yet” and then he turns up with his cronies, who seem to be alternate versions, with diluted assertiveness. And then the fatal words – “You’re just like me!” And all the characters become origami and mirrors.

          • http://twitter.com/TedHeistman Ted Heistman

I’m going to have to see that again.
