Open Up and Say ‘Police State’: Supreme Court Says Taking DNA From Arrestees OK

In a five-to-four decision, the Supreme Court ruled that “gentle” swabbing the inside of a suspect’s mouth after arrest does not constitute an “unreasonable” search by law enforcement authorities.

Judge Antonin Scalia was one of the four dissenters. Here’s what he had to say:

Via NPR:

“Make no mistake about it. “Because of today’s decision, your DNA can be taken and entered into a national database if you are ever arrested, rightly or wrongly, and for whatever reason.”

Seems like only yesterday (1983) when PCR was developed by Kary Mullis at Cetus.

Quite an interesting story and character.

Another DNA related discovery influenced by LSD.

To see how it has evolved into use and abuse over three decades is unfortunate and quite disappointing.

      no technology is without disservices
but wee tend to focus on the “good” it does
      and ignore the “evil”

it’s the one great blind-sight of modern humans
they hardly ever see the downside of technology
      until it’s way too late

the automobile created the police state
      and no one even noticed
(ok, McLuhan noticed, but no one noticed him)

You may recall at the time (mid 80’s) we were all very excited about Interleukin 2 and its use as an immunotherapeutic in cancer and aids patients.

Of course it is still helping to relieve suffering today as Proleukin.

The arc of invention and innovation throughout history is certainly a play of forces – tugging relentlessly from every direction with varying degrees of power, strength, and success.

In the end I side with an upward trending trajectory of a conscious cosmological civilization currently at an amazing stage of metamorphosis.

          what most people don’t know
is that all this has happened many time before

usually the cycle goes like this:
a great worldwide cataclysmic disaster occurs
it then sends most life-forms back to square one
          wee struggle like Sisyphus
to push the rock of civilization uphill
          then one day
          wee accidentally create
          a great worldwide cataclysmic disaster
          one is created for us
          and there wee go again
          round & round it goes
          where it stops nobody knows

  2. Thanks a lot Supreme Court…I suppose soon enough if the police feel like it, they can ‘politely’ and ‘gently’ steal your heartbeat…and still be within the boundaries of the law.
