Saudi Blogger Sentenced to 600 Lashes and Seven Years in Prison

Saudi-Editor-Raif-Badawi-620x513Saudi Arabia has sentenced blogger Raif Badawi to 600 lashes and seven years in prison for running a blog that the state says undermined the security of the country. He actually got off easy, if you can believe it:

Via BBC:

Mr Badawi was originally charged with apostasy, or abandonment of religion, a crime in Saudi Arabia that carries with it the death penalty.

Lawyer Waleed Abu Alkhair told the BBC that Mr Badawi, a father of three, had confirmed in court that he was a Muslim but told the judge “everyone has a choice to believe or not believe.”

He was convicted of the charges of setting up a website that undermines general security and of ridiculing religious figures.

The judge ordered that the 600 lashes be administered 150 at a time.

I’d be surprised if he survives the lashes

That is a ridiculous amount per sitting.

pretty sure a single lash is a ridiculous amount.

An argument has been made that lashing or caning is more humane than prison.
If it were a choice between being whipped or put in prison, I’d chose the lash.

You know people who receive lashes and canings usually experience life-long pain afterwards. These punishments damage the tissue so much it just grows back as psudo-scar tissue.

That was my first thought… He’d probably bleed out.

      • Hadrian999

        bleeding, infection, shock…..take your pick

What do you think they use for the lashes, like a straight up bullwhip? I agree, it definitely seems as though they’ve sentenced the poor guy to death.

Anyone else think he looks like Arabic Loki though?

a singletail whip can deliver a variety of results from less than a welt to significant cuts. some folks pay good money for those skills. i imagine that the putative whippings are considerably less nuanced, and are not at the hands of exotic beauties in shiny rubber catsuits.

So you’re saying I should cancel my ticket to Saudi Arabia? That sucks, I thought I just stumbled on a cheap alternative.

        • The Well Dressed Man

Even if I fancied hours of Sharia-level beating by a first-class Domme, I think I’d spend less than that sort of airfare.
