Are Schools Hostile to Boys?

Via Time Ideas:

As school begins in the coming weeks, parents of boys should ask themselves a question: Is my son really welcome? A flurry of incidents last spring suggests that the answer is no. In May, Christopher Marshall, age 7, was suspended from his Virginia school for picking up a pencil and using it to “shoot” a “bad guy” — his friend, who was also suspended. A few months earlier, Josh Welch, also 7, was sent home from his Maryland school for nibbling off the corners of a strawberry Pop-Tart to shape it into a gun. At about the same time, Colorado’s Alex Evans, age 7, was suspended for throwing an imaginary hand grenade at “bad guys” in order to “save the world.”

In all these cases, school officials found the children to be in violation of the school’s zero-tolerance policies for firearms, which is clearly a ludicrous application of the rule. But common sense isn’t the only thing at stake here. In the name of zero tolerance, our schools are becoming hostile environments for young boys.

thank god for stupidity among edumacators
because sending kids home is the best help you can give a kid
suspending or expelling them is the best protection
against Homeland brainwashing & conformity training

We used to get in trouble all the time at school for playing Star Wars and shit, even when we were blasting imaginary storm troopers.

Thank God I went to school before zero tolerance.

Did you get to shoot Greedo first? Lucky bastard.

I watched the first Star Wars film in a drive-in theater! I must’ve been three or four. Still remember some of it.

Here is an interesting blog post about the traits public school selects for

You’re not supposed to have fun in school, boys, you’re supposed to enjoy the soul-sucking monotony and mindless indoctrination.

You mean schools in America. I am afraid this seems in keeping with the prevalent fear and hysteria there. Unfortunately, that means we follow. We are already diagnosing increased ADD when it is clearly the parents who watched too much Oprah. Things were so much better with the Banana Splits.

  6. I’d say US public schools hostile to inmates regardless of sex, and that zero tolerance is simply the leading edge of that attack.

Although, I would say that the girls don’t generally get picked on until puberty. Generally.

Then it’s all sorts of weird comments about skirts that were completely fine last year, but you hadn’t noticed yet that you’d grown another inch over the summer, so now that same skirt makes you a shameless whore…don’t even get me started on the existential crises surrounding a much older woman telling an 11 year old girl to “sit like a lady” while darting venomous eyes, when that child is still pretty fuzzy on what exactly happens during sex anyway.

Apparently 11 is way too old to sit cross-legged on the floor. Who knew? “Close your legs you hussy!” Or, I don’t know, maybe that’s just the south.

I grew up in the 70’s and 80’s, when the focus was on getting girls’ self-images up. It always felt like the boys were being ignored. So this is not new.

It’s called “Victim Training”… anybody shows any signs of defending them self or others… we will traumatize them enough that they’ll never try that shit again

How long before we see Spartan private schools that embrace macho culture and raise boys to be men? I bet it’ll be a right wing project. Too bad.

Since the basis of Spartan military training and success was homoerotic love for one’s fellow soldiers, I doubt it.

After I threw this up there, I remembered that they already do this-its called military school, where you ship your kid if you think he might be gay, so that he can associate with other kids that might be gay in an all-male environment, so you aren’t far off on that, Charlie.

  11. A few years back an 8 year old boy was suspended for 3 weeks for drug dealing. He gave another student a Flintstones Chewable Vitamin. Zero tolerance is simply abdication of responsibility. It’s a policy of cowards. Why do we pay administrators if not to exercise their best judgement?
