In Case You Missed It: New Episode of DisinfoCast with Guest Brian Wood is Available

dmz-a-coverMost of you probably already know this, but just in case there were a few of you who missed it go up on Friday, there’s a new episode of the DisinfoCast ready to go. My guest was Brian Wood, the author of  several politically charged comic book series including “DMZ”, “The Massive”, and “Channel Zero”. We spent over an hour discussing 9/11, the media, Barack Obama, NDAA, global climate change, and much, much more.  Even if you’re not a comic book fan, I think that you’ll enjoy our talk.

If you’ve not had the pleasure of reading “DMZ” or any of the rest of Brian’s work, then I strongly recommend you give it a chance. “DMZ” is probably one of the best fictional portrayals of the post 9/11 political climate I’ve ever read. It’s a favorite of mine.

PS: True comic book nerds will also know Wood for his work with X-Men, Star Wars, Conan and a bunch of other equally cool stuff.… Read the rest

Scientists Create New Form Of Matter Composed Of Pure Light

light_saber

Light sabers are now a reality, ScienceDaily reports:

A group at the Harvard-MIT Center for Ultracold Atoms have managed to coax light photons into binding together to form molecules — a state of matter that, until recently, had been purely theoretical.

The discovery runs contrary to accepted wisdom about the nature of light. Photons have long been described as massless particles which don’t interact with each other. “Photonic molecules,” however, behave more like something in science fiction — the light saber.

“What we have done is create a special type of medium in which photons interact with each other so strongly that they begin to act as though they have mass, and they bind together to form molecules,” Lukin said.

The system could be useful in classical computing, considering the power-dissipation challenges chip-makers now face. It might one day even be used to create complex three-dimensional structures wholly out of light.

The Sixth Mass Extinction Is Upon Us: Can Humans Survive?

large planet of the apes blu-ray11Annalee Newitz writes at the Daily Beast/Newsweek:

Over the past four years, bee colonies have undergone a disturbing transformation. As helpless beekeepers looked on, the machinelike efficiency of these communal insects devolved into inexplicable disorganization. Worker bees would fly away, never to return; adolescent bees wandered aimlessly in the hive; and the daily jobs in the colony were left undone until honey production stopped and eggs died of neglect. Colony collapse disorder, as it is known, has claimed roughly 30 percent of bee colonies every winter since 2007.

If bees go extinct, their loss will trigger an extinction domino effect, because crops from apples to broccoli rely on these insects for pollination. At the same time, over a third of the world’s amphibian species are threatened with extinction, and Harvard evolutionary biologist and conservationist E.O. Wilson estimates that 27,000 species of all kinds go extinct per year.

Are we in the first act of a mass extinction that will end in the death of millions of plant and animal species across the planet, including us?

Giordano Bruno: Rebel Monk

Disinfonauts! I recently had the once in a lifetime chance to go to Italy and pay homage to one of my personal heroes. While in Rome I visited the site of the immolation of Giordano Bruno, a man who was once a monk who then followed a new path that resurrected many Gnostic and Hermetic ideas. I made this video to pay homage to his memory in hopes that we will all remember to live our lives with passion, integrity and a willingness to fight for what is true and good in this world.

The Hidden Meanings Of Animal Dreams

animal dreamsVia InnerSelf, Robert Moss reveals how the animals in your dreams can help you:

Our ancestors believed that we are born with a connection with a particular totem animal; this was the raison d’être of the clan system. Some Australian Aborigines believe, up to the present day, that when a human is born, its “bush soul” is born in the form of an animal or bird.

Dream animals come to claim us as powers of the deeper world, revered and inhabited by our ancestors and still vitally alive in the deep cave of ancestral knowing, to which each of us has access if we are willing to go below the surface levels of consciousness.

Whatever animal is stalking you in your dreams, unfold its significance. Study its natural characteristics. Is it diurnal or nocturnal? What does it eat? You may find your dreams are giving you excellent tips on how to follow the natural path of your own energies.

How Suppression Led to Tarantism and Dancing Mania

dancing mania

I refuse to dance unless I’ve consumed at least half of my weight in grain alcohol (though I have been known to attempt the Dougie, as long as I’m by myself and the curtains have been drawn).  Generally speaking, a request to get down on the dance floor will almost certainly send me into a state of blind terror, accompanied by hives and the ice sweats.

You can imagine, then, my horror when hearing about “tarantism,” a disease which causes its victims to become irritable and restless, and was fatal unless treated immediately by engaging in aggressive dancing.  It was relatively common during the 16th and 17th centuries in southern Italy, and is said to be the origin of the popular folk dance, “Tarantella,” which was performed by victims as the most important part of their therapy.

Hydrotherapy was also considered to be an important part of the healing process.  Suffering would abate while listening to the soft sound of a gentle waterfall.  Cloth would be soaked in wine and wrapped around the shoulders of a dancer.  Many victims craved water and were even known to accidentally drown themselves, following deep contemplation of the ocean.… Read the rest

Scientist Attacked And Severely Injured By The Cloned Cow He Created

cloned cow

They’re coming for us. Via Intellihub News:

54-year-old Professor Park Se-pill of Jeju National University in South Korea was seriously injured after being attacked by a cloned cow that he created in 2009. He has suffered a spinal injury and 5 broken ribs and will need 8 months of treatment before recovering.

The researchers took cells from the ear of a bull before it was butchered in 2008. They kept these cells in cold storage before using them to fertilize eggs which were implanted into a cow.

“Park was video-recording a black cow, which he cloned from species indigenous to Jeju four years ago, and all of a sudden, it charged and attacked him for 15 minutes,” a school official said. “The 800-kilogram black cow is very strong because its cell donor was the best available. Park could not escape easily because he wore a special suit and long boots.”
