The Myth of Choice: How Junk-Food Marketers Target Our Kids

Anna Lappé & Food MythBusters have a great new video series combating the processed food industry’s marketing onslaught:

Big Food spends close to $2 billion every year telling kids and teens what’s cool to eat through advertising, promotions, and sponsorships. Meanwhile, across the country, fast-food chains are crowding out grocery stores and supermarkets, narrowing the healthy food choices available.

Scary? It sure is, but together, we can work to curb this predatory marketing and stand up for real food.

We believe that marketing targeting to children and teenagers is a public health crisis. Watch our movies and dig into this page to understand why.

Protect our kids. Tell McDonald’s to end its predatory marketing to children and shut down happymeal.com. Visit http://www.foodmyths.org to take action!

Food Waste: The Next Food Revolution

Household food trash NYJesse Hirsch and Reyhan Harmanci have a tremendous article about food waste in the new Modern Farmer, which tells us that “Half the food in the last year was thrown out. One billion people are hungry. The next food revolution is about what you’re not eating”:

How are we going to feed 9 billion people by 2050? The answer to this question — or the lack thereof — is one of the biggest issues in agriculture today. Experts estimate that we need to grow 60 percent more food than we currently produce. And as a result, there is a push to constantly create more. More miracle crops. More monocultures. More monocrops. More seeds. More food.

But are we missing the point? Currently, in the U.S., almost half of our food — 40 percent of what we grow— ends up in the garbage. Globally, food waste is rising to 50 percent as developing nations struggle with spoilage and Western nations simply toss edible food away.

Life On A Diet Of Nothing But Raw Meat

raw meatShould we go back to the wild? Via Vice, Derek Nance has eaten nothing but raw, often rotting meat for six years. He claims he has never felt better:

[The raw meat diet] was started by a dentist named Weston Price who in the 1930s studied the health benefits of eating more raw foods, including meats. He studied the Native Americans and a few of them who lived on a guts-and-grease diet. He found people in primitive communities were much healthier than we are today.

I had a couple of goats in my yard, so I slaughtered them. I ate both of those goats, all raw, and just switched over like that. After the first week, I felt absolutely great, and I never went back.

The organ meat of the animal actually contains vitamin C. So I just eat the organ meat and the connective tissue and everything else. [I] also eat rotten meat.

Are You A Transhuman? Larry King Interviews Futurist FM-2030

Want a glimpse of someone truly born far before their time? Circa 1989, the future-obsessed professor and consultant named FM-2030 (born Fereidoun M. Esfandiary) interviewed by Larry King, with befuddled call-ins from middle Americans. Author of a book titled Are You a Transhuman?: Monitoring and Stimulating Your Personal Rate of Growth in a Rapidly Changing World, FM-2030 told the public that they should be prepared and eager to evolve to "transhumans." However, he emphasized a brand of super-optimistic futurism that was at its core not about technological advancement so much as becoming increasingly "humanity rich" – more open, empathetic, and compassionate. He died in 2000 and is currently cryogenically preserved, awaiting reanimation:

Starbucks, Her Majesty’s Government And An Apocalypse

hand_grenade_war_military_bomb_army_marines_mug-r250b15dbdbaf42dd8d3d721fe95eded7_x7jgr_8byvr_512One meme in ‘merry old England’ which requires swift disembowelment is the curious idea there’s a quasi-religious duty to pay Her Majesty’s Government with as much tax as possible. Starbucks came under fire recently for legally avoiding the UK’s excessive taxation system. In the face of massive pressure from Her Majesty’s obedient subjects, who duly protested once Her broadcaster the BBC made an issue of it, the company was forced to relent[1].

There’s a theory Roman Emperors who declared themselves Gods, or God-appointed, did not do so simply because they were arrogant but instead as a power grab aimed at the religious establishment. In practical terms it appears to have been a way of getting access to the huge booty sacrificed to ‘Gods’ after each harvest. Her Majesty’s Government has much in common with them. Those subjected to Her rule must sacrifice their time and money to a Monarch who also claims authority directly from a God[2]. Curiously though, in the so-called Modern world, loyal subjects will defend to their death her right to be Queen.… Read the rest
