Facebook Building Walled Corporate City For Employees

Via Valleywag, Silicon Valley workers will have the opportunity to disappear inside Facebook, for good:

If Facebook staffers opt to move in to work, they’ll be getting a very sweet deal out of it: the Anton Menlo project includes all the comforts of suburbia and college combined. What 20-something engineer wouldn’t want to live in a walled compound?

Work is only five minutes away—and thanks to mediocre or non-existent public transit options, no one from The Outside will be able to easily visit. It’ll be like you never existed on Earth before joining Facebook.

To really finesse that You’ve-been-removed-from-the rest of society vibe, a six-foot wall surrounds most of the project.

I dunno. Doesn’t seem that odd. commuting sucks. I guess it is a bit insular, but there are a lot of gated communities like this. I am looking forward to domed cities myself.

  2. Sounds cool for me.

I just had a dream about something like this last night. Not Facebook in particular, but I think it might have been a Great Outdoors sports and hunting store…the employees were actually slaves and if you fucked up you were moved to shittier and shittier quarters…there were also a lot of starving former pets around the compound the “employees/slaves” would try to catch and eat.

Okay, that’s more dystopian than what is being suggested here…this is more like some ideas in certain Philip K. Dick stories…

I think I had that dream too. Somebody took my red stapler, and moved my desk to the basement.

So not only do I have to deal with Tony the dick in marketing, but then I have to live right next door to him, too? Forget it.

Am I the only one that can’t figure out why Facebook has enough employees to fill a city? I understand they have some type of mod and techs and some ad men, but do they have a whole city worth of people?

    a very Chinese move
most large Chinese corporations, many small companies &
    the PRC gruberment
all provide housing for all their employees
    as part of the package
kinda gets them where they live

  7. Bioshock didn’t end well for the creator either.

What if one has indulgences unaproved by the company? Such as recreational drug use, a proclivity for hookers, etc. I supose one could find another place to do such, yet taking bong rips while sitting on the couch after work is one of the best things to do on earth.

Any corporation worth it’s soul crushing greed is bound to have intrusive rules to protect it’s soul crushing greed.

I wonder if the Zuck will be hunting his employees for sport in this city/ game preserve?

Good. Their private bus lines that currently haul these people from SF to silicon valley and back are clogging up the streets something terrible. No exaggeration, there are scores and scores of these giant busses roaming through my neighborhood every day during commute hours.
