JoyCamp: ‘They Wake’

They Wake

“Waking up” other people to the truth of our reality might be one of the hardest things a person can do. JoyCamp shows you just how difficult, but not impossible, this can be. Their latest installment is a tribute to John Carpenter’s “documentary” film, “They Wake.”

As the great Roddy Piper said, “I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick a$$… and I’m all out of bubblegum.”

I watched the movie again last spring for the first time in many years. It’s still very watchable even though it’s an 80’s movie.

I rewatched it a week or two ago. I’d like to see the the idea of capitalists as a vampire/predator class gain currency once more. Somehow they’ve gotten it hammered into everyone’s head that they’re friendly “job creators” and that we should be grateful for the privilege of laboring under their yoke. How backwards is that?

Great flick! Definitely felt like prophecy for a 10/12 year old version of me the first time I saw it.

Now, imagine a version of this scene with a dozen different pairs of sunglasses (or books, or whatever), and a dozen guys all beating on each other because they’re each sure that they have the TRUTH that will wake up the others. That’s the Internet.

I don’t believe it is always necessary to destroy people’s illusions. In fact I would say it is oftentimes downright evil. Thinking that what you need to do in life is run around and set off alarm bells is naive and counterproductive.
Alternatively, I feel like the incessant indoctrination that many people get from many established media sources is evil as well, so I gently skirt or sometimes subvert the subjects discussed in those forums whenever possible to avoid stirring up flashpoints planted by propaganda.

We should never offend the cowards of this world! Let those cowards rest comfortably in their illusions! Cowards and Zombies! Let’s make better memes to maintain the sleep!

I think Tony’s running Superman punch is my favorite technique here. Or maybe Kevin’s knee drop to the nuts. You guys Trane UFC?
