The Misfits’ Jerry Only at New York Comic Con

I really wasn’t expecting to bump into Jerry Only and his Misfits bandmate Chupacabra (yeah, yeah, I know, it’s not the original line-up) at New York Comic Con, but that’s part and parcel of the madness of that event. I don’t do many music industry interviews (and this one was spur of the moment with zero prep time, and entirely off the top of my head to boot) but I rose to the occasion and did the best I could under the circumstances. Chupacabra doesn’t talk much, by the way. Hope you enjoy, Disinfonauts.

Meh, if you go to the San Diego Comic-con, you’re going to see Danzig, and if you’re cool to him and you talk comics instead of music, you have a pretty good shot at hanging out with him at his hotel suite. He’s not anywhere as big a dick as his reputation leads you to think, and he’s the original, plus now that he’s put on some weight, he’s not such a health nazi. I guess if you’re on the east coast tho, you gotta take what you can get.

Glenn founded the band, had a brief line-up with a bunch of guys who didn’t make the cut and then recruited Jerry. The stuff before Jerry is pretty much ancient history.

I’m based in the Deep South, but I’ve been attending both NYCC and SDCC since 2010. I’ve only seen him there once out of the four times I’ve gone to SDCC, but I’m told he sometimes has a booth. I’ve never seen it, but I’ve never had enough time to really make a concerted effort. I give him a wide berth, not because I think he’s a dick, but because I think he’s super-sensitive and a bit of a crybaby and that’s what makes him act like a dick. Most of the people I attend the con with (exhibitors) have had very poor experiences with him, and I just don’t have the time or patience for people like that anymore. I’m not doubting you, though. Maybe there’s a side of him that no one I know in my admittedly small social circle has experienced. I do know Jerry is a hell of a nice guy, and was signing stuff and doing photos for free with anyone and everyone who wanted them and taking tons of time to chat with fans. In a place where even the dude from “The Last Dragon” wants $20 for a headshot, that’s saying something.

In any case, I’m still a pretty big Danzig fan. The “lost cuts” box set is pretty awesome if you don’t have it. His cover of “Cat People” rocks.

I think Danzig is a classic example of someone that wanted fame, and then when he got it, he didn’t realize that it was a full time job maintaining a public image. I haven’t been to the SDCC in about 5 years now, so I don’t know if he currently still maintains a booth, but he usually wears a nametag that says “Sam Hain” instead of Glen D. Danzig era Misfits will always be the Misfits I think about when someone says Misfits.
