Fired For Refusing Flu Vaccine

So it’s starting: mandatory vaccinations if you want to keep your job. CNN has the report, but I’m sure there must be other examples around the country – list them in the comments if you know of one.

A pregnant nurse tells CNN she was fired from her job after she refused to get a flu shot for fear of miscarrying.

“I’m a healthy person. I take care of my body. For me, the potential risk was not worth it,” Dreonna Breton told CNN Sunday. “I’m not gonna be the one percent of people that has a problem.”

Breton, 29, worked as a nurse at Horizons Healthcare Services in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, when she was told that all employees were required to get a flu shot. The Centers of Disease Control and Prevention advises that all health care professionals get vaccinated annually.

She told her employers that she would not get the vaccine after she explained that there were very limited studies of the effects on pregnant women.

Breton came to the decision with her family after three miscarriages.

The mother of one submitted letters from her obstetrician and primary care doctor supporting her decision, but she was told that she would be fired on December 17 if she did not receive the vaccine before then.

Horizons Healthcare Services spokesman Alan Peterson told CNN affiliate WPVI that it’s unconscionable for a health care worker not to be immunized and that pregnant women are more susceptible to the flu…

I work at the Children’s Hospital in Denver where Flu shots are mandatory. They say we can opt out and wear masks instead but they have to be changed every fifteen minutes; not much of a choice there I’d say. You don’t get the shot, you don’t work.

This makes no sense. I don’t see why (well the profit motive of course and he liability I understand) people who opt out get sorted into areas where they don’t’ have to interact with high risk groups (children, the elderly or immune compromised), but instead a reactionary stance is taken. This is similar to when I have talked to medical professionals and the other side (the anti-vaccine stance) about why there is no discussion about making a more expensive version of the flu without adjuvants and with a much smaller shelf life (no preservatives). You know what I ave received from multiple people on both sides of the argument? Blank stares and a whole lot of no opinions or thoughts and feelings on it. We are all programmed to think in certain modalities, and we are definitely programmed to think certain ways on issues like this. Controlled opposition rules the day.
