Here’s one to drop on your hardcore anti-drug friends and family members. Note that this study was conducted by the University of Alabama and the John Hopkins University School of Medicine – not exactly a “pro-drug” fringe group.

Via Raw Story:

A study of more than 25,000 people under community corrections supervision suggests the use of psychedelic drugs like LSD can keep people out of prison.

The research is the first in 40 years to examine whether drugs like LSD and “magic” mushrooms can help reform criminals.

“Our results provide a notable exception to the robust positive link between substance use and criminal behavior,” the researchers from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine wrote in their study, which was published in the January issue of the Journal of Psychopharmacology.

“They add to both the older and emerging body of data indicating beneficial effects of hallucinogen interventions, and run counter to the legal classification as well as popular perception of hallucinogens as categorically harmful substances with no therapeutic potential.”

When test subjects under clinical conditions today report psychedelics as allowing permanent or long lasting positive personality traits, that’s defiantly encouraging research.

    Holy shit!

Finally we have an explanation as to why every single culture to encounter psychedelics has used them as part of initiation rights which cement feelings of interdependent responsibility and social unity in teenagers.

    Didn’t see that one coming.

lol. totally agree with you here.

not to overshare, but when i was going through a particular period in my early 20s- and had insurmountable insomnia- very small doses of certain mushrooms (producing no more effect than a mild dose of green) allowed me to sleep and work things out in my dreamstate.

Psychedelics are a temporary wormhole allowing parabolic ascent to higher consciousness and understanding that leaves a lasting residue of the experience behind as spirituality, so I can totally see this.. Just watch out for bad-trips.. might cause additional damage to those who are too far gone, too damaged.
    Hope they continue the studies.

Are such people capable of enlightenment?

      • Lookinfor Buford

Absolutely, but the subject’s frame of mind while entering the experience is of extreme importance in determining its trajectory.

OH GEE!!! Timothy Leary found this out back in the 50’s

A lot of the problem with viewing the universe as being comprised of matter comes with the idea that it’s devoid of conscious experience somehow. More and more, little by...
