Duke University Freshman Porn Star In Her Own Words: Discrimination, Debt and Stigma

A female student tells her story and explains why. The liberation of her body, hedonism, and the ability to afford tuition without hobbling debt.

I am a porn star. I am a college freshman. You know nothing about me.

“But why would you do porn?”

People often ask me this question. They know I am a freshman at Duke University, and their shock and incredulity are apparent when the rumor they’ve heard whispered or read on a chat board turns out to be true.

However, the answer is actually quite simple. I couldn’t afford $60,000 in tuition, my family has undergone significant financial burden, and I saw a way to graduate from my dream school free of debt, doing something I absolutely love. Because to be clear: My experience in porn has been nothing but supportive, exciting, thrilling and empowering.

The next question is always: “But when you graduate, you won’t be able to get a job, will you? I mean, who would hire you?”

I simply shrug and say, “I wouldn’t want to work for someone who discriminates against sex workers.”

I am not ashamed of porn. On the contrary, doing pornography fulfills me. That said, I vehemently want to have my privacy respected — and I ask that anyone who knows my real name respect the fact that I am only discussing this publicly because it was made a public matter when I was confronted by a fraternity member who chose to tell hundreds of other men in the Greek scene.

That’s why I am writing this. That’s why I gave an interview to the student newspaper at Duke. Because if people are going to talk about you, you might as well control the conversation and use it to start a dialogue, which in this case is about the abuses we inflict on sex workers.

One of the facts Internet commenters have gotten very wrong is accusing me of participating in “rape fantasy porn.” This is a horrifying accusation, but I absolutely understand where people are coming from. The site in question that I shot for is a rough sex website. That is how I perceived it at the time. I was not coerced or harmed in any way during the filming of the scene. Everything I did was consensual. I also stand by and defend the right of adult performers to engage in rough sex porn.

Everyone has their kinks and we should not shame anyone for enjoying something that is perfectly legal and consensual for all parties involved.

Of course, I do fully acknowledge that some women don’t have such a positive experience in the industry. We need to listen to these women. And to do that we need to remove the stigma attached to their profession and treat it as a legitimate career that needs regulation and oversight. We need to give a voice to the women that are exploited and abused in the industry. Shaming and hurling names at them, the usual treatment we give sex workers, is not the way to achieve this.

I never get why someone would discriminate against porn workers, we are all whores. We sell our bodies or our ideals when we take a job.

      I’m selling mine right now… :-/

Porn stars might be less of a whore, than other workers, if they enjoy their job.

“There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged . One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.”

It was Brave New World for me.

          • http://americancannibal.org/ American Cannibal

You must have been a precocious child.

Hobbit popped my cherry. I attempted to read Atlas Shrugged. I think I got through the first Chapter or two before giving up. It’s a poorly written book.

          • echar

I am not sure. LSD was introduced to me early , so was Brave New World. A kid from a grade above was like, ” This is next level shit. You gotta read it.” I read a lot horror around that time. Stephen King, Clive Barker, Richard Matheson, H.P. Lovecraft, E. A. Poe.

Then some fantasy, such as Dragon Lance, And The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever. Which led to Magick, philosophy, and whatever other book that catches my eye. Also, I think I enjoyed Point Counter Point by Huxley, more than I did Brave New World. I read former much later though.

          • http://americancannibal.org/ American Cannibal

Ooh.. Clive Barker and Matheson 4 sure. I remember reading that stuff. And Poe and Lovecraft and Asimov at that early time, along with MAD Magazine. I never much got into fantasy, tho, or that deep into SciFi, beyond Vonngegut and Herbert and William Gibson. I think my favorites of Huxley were Brave New World and Doors of Perception. Point Counter Point was fantastic. I think the structures Huxley employed in that book influenced Milan Kundera, though I don’t know this for sure. I just like to believe what I say is true.

            Great quote.

    • echar

Where are you getting Republican from?

      • Andrew

From her interview with the Duke student newspaper.

        • echar

          I see now.

        • emperorreagan

She’s an aspiring lawyer, too, according to the student newspaper article, which is almost as funny as the Republican thing.

Assuming she does go that route, there’s the whole “good moral character” that state bar associations require. I’m willing to bet that there are quite a few state bar associations that would not allow her admittance on good moral character grounds (but the attorneys that conduct the interviews will probably enjoy passing around her tapes).

          • InfvoCuernos

That’s funny, considering just about all of our politicians start their professional lives as lawyers. I’d much rather vote for a pornstar than a lawyer. That lawyer thing is going to wreck her image.

          • Eric_D_Read

I’ve had pet snakes with better moral character than any lawyer I’ve ever met.

          • emperorreagan

Really, the moral character requirement is just used to harass/intimidate/deter individuals that the people on the bar committees would rather not admit or exclude people stupid enough to leave extensive paper trails (in particular with regards to the only true American moral value – not paying your bills on time).

I read one article that said almost no one was denied admittance in the 1800s on moral character grounds – but only white men were allowed admission. Denials (or the preferable path of deterring people from continuing the process, since that leaves less of a record) were used more widely in the early 1900s, when state bars wanted to deny admission to Jews and eastern europeans (with women and other minorities otherwise still largely prohibited by other parts of the process).

          • Matt Staggs

On a tangent here, but what kind of snake did you own? I had a Florida king snake that was as mellow as could be.

          • Eric_D_Read

A Timber Rattler. He was not mellow, but he made no apologies for it so we were cool.

  • Dingbert

That was just horrible. Stay in school, kid.

I can’t tell if that chapel looks more like a gigantic phallus or middle finger.

Is a middle finger not representative of a penis? I’d always assumed this was the meaning of the gesture… :|

        Then it’s settled. It’s both!

  • Guest

well i hope she donates some of her profits to the students around her who don’t have the option to make bucks from porn (ie overweight, less attractive, male heterosexual nerds).

    • Mr Grim

Yeah, because those nerds will be oh-so-altruistic once their start-up gets acquired by Google for large sums of MegaBucks.

  • splat

ok so she’s having a great time being a porn star. why is this a story? don’t we generally envy and admire porn stars? i imagine she might be discriminated against mostly out of jealously and resentment for having things so much easier than the other students.

One has to wonder how far this whore will go in relationships before telling her partner she is, was a whore? Becoming a lawyer is perfect for her as she already has no respect for herself or any foresight. Imagine telling your children momma was (is) a whore! One also has to wonder how she would respond to her daughter doing the same? Short-sighted or dumb as a rock? Both fit.

    • http://americancannibal.org/ American Cannibal

You angry, Joe. I hope you’re not married with children.

      • Joe

One child on her way to becoming a naturopath. How about you? Would you mind your daughter being a whore or would you actively involve yourself in her “trade”?
You seem like a typical liberal. The truth is hate to you. Perversion is healthy to you. You are sick.
Healthy people deride whores, for obvious reasons.

        • http://americancannibal.org/ American Cannibal

That poor, poor girl having to suffer through childhood with you as father. I hope she has the strength to weather your tyrannical rantings and negative thoughts. You are a pitiful and stoopid man, Joe. You make Jesus sad.

“But its absurd for you to demand respect and validation from society.”

“If you want to be a whore, fine, just don’t be surprised when your
future boyfriends dump you as soon as they find out about this.”

So…”society” in this example is made up exclusively of the present/past boyfriends of imaginary whore?
