Abby Martin speaks with Margaret Heffernan, entrepreneur and author of the upcoming book ‘A Bigger Prize’ about how the notion of willful blindness inhibits humanity’s ability to grow, and how the concept of competition is more damaging than we’ve been indoctrinated to believe.

Sometimes your friends are your enemies, and your enemies are your friends.

    • American Cannibal

      Spoken like a true Realist.

A friend indeed, is a friend with weed, coke, booze, pills, etc…
        Misery loves company.

        • American Cannibal

What you describes sounds more like acquaintance in need of a fix, not a friend. Those people you keep a safe psychological distance away from yourself and the medicine cabinet.

          • echar

Those are examples of friends that can be your enemies. But yes.

          • American Cannibal

Enemies wouldn’t even get through the front door at my house, let alone use the bathroom. Not that I have any enemies.

          • echar

Friends can enable bad habits, behaviors, ideas, etc… That is all.

          • American Cannibal

People who enable bad habits, behaviors, ideas, etc. are not friends.

          • echar

You are right, to show our mutual agreement of camaraderie we shall have a drink. Agreed?

          • American Cannibal

It’s post-work-time, so why not? Cheers! Glug, glug, glug, glut glut glut….

          • echar

I just enabled you three times.

          • American Cannibal

            You’re a good friend… hiccup….

Righteous. Don’t hear stuff like this everyday. Is this a Christian band? I like it.

          • echar

Actually no, it’s a post-metal band formed by Justin Broadrick after he left Godflesh.

Everything by Jesu is worth a listen, imo.

          • American Cannibal

            I am. Thank U!

          • echar

            you are welcome.

            That’s a rather damning indictment of codependency…

          • American Cannibal

            Thank you.

Why would an enemy use the front door for entrance? or the bathroom for relieving themselves?

          • American Cannibal

They wouldn’t because they are not invited to hang out with me. Only friends are allowed over. It’s this whole rule I have for life: My house is a sanctuary, not a pub or war-zone.

The way she paints Snowden and other whistleblowers as naive idealists who become disillusioned at the way their institutions are not living up to their lofty ideals made me feel how young the human species is.
