The NSA Has Their Own ‘Dear Abby’

One of Edward Snowden’s leaks revealed this incredible bit of absurdity: The agency has its own “Dear Abby” type advice column titled “Ask Zelda”. Incredibly enough, one of the published columns is a response to an NSA employee who complains about a boss and his team of “snitches” spying on casual conversations with coworkers. For an extra dose of irony, check out the department the employee works in…

What if the National Security Agency had its own advice columnist? What would the eavesdroppers ask about?

You don’t need to guess. An NSA official, writing under the pen name “Zelda,” has actually served at the agency as a Dear Abby for spies. Her “Ask Zelda!” columns, distributed on the agency’s intranet and accessible only to those with the proper security clearance, are among the documents leaked by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden. The columns are often amusing – topics include co-workers falling asleep on the job, sodas being stolen from shared fridges, supervisors not responding to emails, and office-mates who smell bad.

Artist Surgically Removes Own Skin to Make a Ring Out of It

Fresh on the heels of that post about engagement rings being a huge scam comes the story of an Icelandic artist who surgically removed some of his own skin in order to make this unique, hairy ring. It’s for sale, if you must have it: Only €350,000. Not sure if an engagement ring made of your own skin is a scam, but I wouldn’t recommend trying to make one yourself, in any case. The artist, Sruli Recht, makes a lot of other interesting stuff. I suggest you check out his site.

For your consideration: a $500,000 ring mounted with a tanned sliver of hairy human skin. The piece, titled the Forget Me Knot ring, is the creation of boundary-pushing Icelandic fashion and jewelry designer Sruli Recht. For these one-of-a-kind works of art, Recht had a 110 by 10 millimeter a strip of his skin surgically removed from his abdomen; the artist then salted it, tanned it, and embedded it on a gold ring.

After being transported to Auschwitz, Eva Mozes Kor and her twin sister Miriam were subjected to gruesome medical experiments under the infamous Nazi doctor, Josef Mengele – “The Angel of Death”. Eva and Miriam lived long enough to be liberated by Soviet soldiers, but the rest of their family wasn’t so lucky: They were all killed at the camp. Eva recently took to Reddit to answer some questions about her experience as part of their “Ask Me Anything” Q & A series. If you want to know more, you can check out the documentary Forgiving Dr. Mengele, available here.

Via Reddit:

When I was 10 years old, my family and I were taken to Auschwitz. My twin sister Miriam and I were separated from my mother, father, and two older sisters. We never saw any of them again. We became part of a group of twin children used in medical and genetic experiments under the direction of Nazi doctor Josef Mengele.

Six King City, CA Cops Arrested For Bribery, Conspiracy, and Threatening Locals

By Andrew Emett

On February 25 at 5:59 a.m., the Monterey County Sheriff’s Department, Salinas Police Department and the FBI orchestrated the simultaneous arrests of six King City police officers. Included in the apprehensions for corruption charges were former Police Chief Nick Baldiviez, acting Police Chief Bruce Miller and his civilian brother Brian Miller.

Targeting Hispanic residents, Sgt. Bobby Carrillo allegedly received a free vehicle for every 10-15 cars he had impounded. Monterey County District Attorney Dean Flippo believes Sgt. Carrillo received at least five vehicles and gave one to acting Police Chief Bruce Miller, who was Carrillo’s captain at the time.

At a press conference, District Attorney Flippo stated, “The victims were economically disadvantaged persons of Hispanic descent who were targeted by having their vehicles impounded, towed and stored by Miller’s Towing.”

The owner of Miller’s Towing, Brian Miller, is the brother of acting Police Chief Bruce Miller. After forced to wait 30 days, the owners of the confiscated vehicles found themselves unable to pay the exorbitant impound fees and their cars turned over to California’s King City police officers.… Read the rest

Regarding Liz Wahl and Abby Martin, Just a Reminder That Phil Donahue Was Crucified Twice in America for Opposing War with Iraq

With all the coverage of Liz Wahl’s resignation from RT and Abby Martin’s comments (2 ) on why she condemned Russia’s actions in Crimea, thought I would just remind everyone that Phil Donahue, “an American media personality, writer, and film producer best known as the creator and host of The Phil Donahue Show”, a show that had a “29-year run on national television in America”, a person who was “ranked #42 on TV Guide’s 50 Greatest TV Stars of All Time”. a person that Oprah Winfrey credits for giving birth to her show, stating that “if it weren’t for Phil Donahue, there never would have been an Oprah Show!”, was fired from MSNBC for opposing the 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, “even though his show was a highly rated one on the network.”

I believe Chris Hedges put it best in an article entitled, “The Day That TV News Died”:

“I am not sure exactly when the death of television news took place.

Scientists Unlock Mystery of Out-of-Body Experiences (OOBEs)

Inicio_projecaoCan scientists really explain OOBEs? The Sploid blog at Gizmodo reports that they can…

Some people claim that they have experienced out-of-body experiences—aka “astral trips”—floating outside of their bodies and watching themselves from the outside. A team of scientists found someone who says she can do this at will and put her into a brain scanner. What they discovered was surprisingly strange.

Andra M. Smith and Claude Messierwere from the University of Ottawa described this subject’s ability in their paper, published in Frontiers of Human Neuroscience:

She was able to see herself rotating in the air above her body, lying flat, and rolling along with the horizontal plane. She reported sometimes watching herself move from above but remained aware of her unmoving “real” body. The participant reported no particular emotions linked to the experience.

How the hell is this possible? Can it be real? The researchers found that something dramatic, and consistent with her account, was happening in her brain: The fMRI showed a “strong deactivation of the visual cortex” while “activating the left side of several areas associated with kinesthetic imagery,” which includes mental imagery of bodily movement.

LSD Reconsidered for Therapy

William Rafti (CC)

Strange as it may seem in what in many cases is an extremely reactionary period of time, the war on some drugs has loosened up considerably and not just in the burgeoning mariajuana legalization movement. Research into the medical benefits of psychedelic drugs has resumed and appears to be making significant headway. The New York Times reports on the comeback of LSD in psychiatric treatment:

He heard about the drug trial from a friend in Switzerland and decided it was worth volunteering, even if it meant long, painful train journeys from his native Austria and the real possibility of a mental meltdown. He didn’t have much time, after all, and traditional medicine had done nothing to relieve his degenerative spine condition.

“I’d never taken the drug before, so I was feeling — well, I think the proper word for it, in English, is dread,” said Peter, 50, an Austrian social worker, in a telephone interview; he asked that his last name be omitted to protect his identity.

Hillary Clinton: Playing a Dog-Eared ‘Hitler’ Card

192px-Hillary_Clinton_official_Secretary_of_State_portrait_cropThe frontrunner to become the next president of the United States is playing an old and dangerous political game — comparing a foreign leader to Adolf Hitler.

At a private charity event on Tuesday, in comments preserved on audio, Hillary Clinton talked about actions by Russia’s President Vladimir Putin in the Crimea. “Now if this sounds familiar, it’s what Hitler did back in the ’30s,” she said.

The next day, Clinton gave the inflammatory story more oxygen when speaking at UCLA. She “largely stood by the remarks,” the Washington Post reported. Clinton “said she was merely noting parallels between Putin’s claim that he was protecting Russian-speaking minorities in Crimea and Hitler’s moves into Poland, Czechoslovakia and other parts of Europe to protect German minorities.”

Clinton denied that she was comparing Putin with Hitler even while she persisted in comparing Putin with Hitler. “I just want people to have a little historic perspective,” she said.… Read the rest
