Is this rock bottom for 24 hour “news” and opinion channel HLN? In a recent segment devoted to missing Malaysia flight 370, host Jenny Hutt asked “psychic medium” and former host of  Lifetime Network’s “Voices From the Other Side” Lisa Williams to use her magical powers to divine what happened to the missing plane. Before she did so, she asked Williams what she’d say to skeptics who would point out that she doesn’t have any evidence to back up her claims:

Via MEDIAITE and HLN:

“Well naturally, I don’t have hard, concrete evidence, and I think that any psychic who has hard, concrete evidence can’t do their job correctly because they get misinformed – they’ll get interpreted and they’ll just – they’ll just work on what they know, so I tend to work off what I don’t know,” Williams told Hutt.

Williams told Hutt that she believes that the passengers are fine and being held somewhere, and any wreckage found that might suggest otherwise is part of an attempt to mislead searchers.… Read the rest

Visionary director Alejandro Jodorowsky’s (El Topo, The Holy Mountain) proposed treatment for Frank Herbert’s Dune is the stuff of legends: The psychedelic sci-fi freakout that could have been. It has been called “the greatest film never made,” and now documentary filmmaker Frank Pavich tells the tale in his film Jodorowsky’s Dune. He recently spoke with NPR’s Scott Simon.

Via NPR:

On the team Jodorowsky gathered for the film

He had a team of artists, which he dubbed his “spiritual warriors.” [There] was a French comic book artist named Moebius [the pseudonym of Jean Giraud] … a British sci-fi artist named Chris Foss … the Swiss surrealist H. R. Giger … and there was a gentleman named Dan O’Bannon who was going to come in and do special effects. And this team of spiritual warriors worked with Jodorowsky for a good two years in Paris.

The Mystic Vision of Julieta Triangular (NSFW)

Reminiscent of artists like Alejandro Jodorowski and Stanley Kubrick, her style sparks the imagination with a tense juxtaposition of beauty and mania. Her latest work, Bakenti is a fictional-magical short film, an accord with the jungle resting in the Peruvian Amazon. Born from the readings of the Shipibo-Conibo community, the wisdom of indigenous communities, and the supernatural and sacred dimensions of the Earth. Also based on our own reverence and gratitude for the power of Nature, the songs which reside in the heart of each and every human being, which allow us to reconnect with the divine teachings of our ancestors and our guiding plants, such as Ayahuasca.

Find out more about Julieta’s project here.

The American Meat Industry Does Some Very Impressive and Terrifying Things

MeatDo you eat meat every day? Then you’re part of the problem. Cyrus Nemati explains at the Chicago Sun Times:

In the past 60 years, the United States has fallen deeply in love with meat. What was once a treat is now expected at every meal to the point where we can get it in a tube. The demand for meat has increased dramatically, and the largest meat companies have found ways to fulfill that demand cheaply. It’s not a surprise that the path to the six cent Chicken McNugget was built at the expense of not only the chickens themselves, but farmers and smaller meat plants. The quest for cheap meat has resulted in a ruthless market that has left 85 percent of supply in the hands of five companies.

This oligopoly has driven the meat industry to do some very impressive and terrifying things. We raise nine billion animals for the slaughter a year.

Scientists Create Mugshots From Perps’ DNA

Elvis_mugshotThis is some next level CSI! New Scientist reports on the DNA-generated mugshots:

A murder has been committed, and all the cops have to go on is a trace of DNA left at the scene. It doesn’t match any profile in databases of known criminals, and the trail goes cold. But what if the police could issue a wanted poster based on a realistic “photofit” likeness built from that DNA?

Not if, but when, claim researchers who have developed a method for determining how our genes influence facial shape. One day, the technique may even allow us to gaze into the faces of extinct human-like species that interbred with our own ancestors.

It’s already possible to make some inferences about the appearance of crime suspects from their DNA alone, including their racial ancestry and some shades of hair colour. And in 2012, a team led by Manfred Kayser of Erasmus University Medical Center in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, identified five genetic variants with detectable effects on facial shape.

The White Witch of Los Angeles

The following is from the new book, THE QUEST FOR GNOSIS, available now.20120125_123912_Alec_Singer_majik_500

Some people come into your life who simply exude something so kind and generous, a glow of goodness, Maja is one of those people. A brilliant author, orator, radio host, mother and snappy dresser, Maja does it all with a soft and strong grace. I’ve had the pleasure of attending many of Maja’s Magic School sessions at the legendary Theosophical Society’s Besant Lodge and have learned a great deal from her insights. She delivers a message that confirms the presence of magic in the world, but pulls no punches when discussing the how’s and why’s of the world being so messed up. It is a privilege and an honor to have her grace the pages of this book and I think after you see our conversation, you will adore her as well.

GDR – Maja, what does the term Gnosis mean to you in the classical sense and what does it mean in the present practical sense?… Read the rest

Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters Fires Back At Accusations of Anti-Semitism Following Criticism of Israel

Abby Zimet writes at Common Dreams:

Confronting recent criticism of his support for Palestinian rights and the BDS movement in two furious, personal, open letters, Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters rips the “crude pattern” of equating his and others’ criticisms of “the policies of this government of Israel” with anti-Semitism, viewing it as perhaps “a reaction to the fact that BDS is gaining ground, day by day and year by year, all over the world.” Arguing that dehumanization of the other is “the root of all injustice and oppression” and that “the tree of fear and bigotry bears only bitter fruit,” Waters cites the death of his father fighting the Nazis in Italy to chide critics – especially those penning poisonous pieces about Waters’ “anti-Semitic stench” – with, “Do not presume to preach to me, my father’s son, about anti-Semitism or human rights.”

“Look to your own house and the human rights abuses and racism of the Israeli government you defend.
