Former President Jimmy Carter Uses Snail Mail to Thwart NSA Spies

During a recent appearance on Meet the Press, President Jimmy Carter prefers snail mail over email when it comes to sensitive communications with foreign leaders because he suspects the NSA monitors his email. Perhaps he’s right, but what makes him think that Washington’s spooks won’t intercept and steam open his physical correspondence, too?

Via Slate:

Because of privacy concerns, former President Jimmy Carter has returned to snail mail to avoid surveillance. Carter told NBC’s Meet the Press on Sunday that he thinks the NSA may be monitoring his email.

“I have felt that my own communications were probably monitored,” he said. “And when I want to communicate with a foreign leader privately, I type or write the letter myself, put it in the post office and mail it. … I believe if I sent an email, it will be monitored.”

Carter said in the interview that he thought the government has “abused our own intelligence agencies.”

Pretty sure they check the snail mail too jimmy.

But NSA and others do most of their SIGINT passively anymore due to the massive amount of data involved. Covertly analyzing snail mail isn’t so easy. It also requires cooperation with an underfunded, overworked, and unionized civilian Federal agency. Nothing is 100% safe, but snail mail really is your best bet.

I doubt they check all of our snail mail, but they probably check that of persons of interest.

The U.S. Post Office logs the address, return address, postmark, etc of every piece of mail they process. Basically, they image the outside of the mail or package.

Additionally, they’ve been known to scrutinize packages of persons of interest going so far as to even “accidentally” tear them open and then “notice” something in “plain sight”.

They do those things without warrants.

Of course it is well known that in certain circumstances they surreptitiously open mail.

mail intercept has always been apart of intelligence services repertoire. the advent of mechanical mail processing has only enhanced these capabilities. unless jimmy is engaged in serious tradecraft it’s an idiotic notion to think such communication is secure.
