    Tocqueville noted that it was extraordinarily difficult to engage in critical discussion with Americans.

    This, he speculated, is due in part to a sincere belief that they are personally charged with upholding their democracy’s spirit of equality, which they believe is not promoted by making distinctions among their fellows. Not accustomed to making distinctions among persons, they become indifferent judges of the merits of argument. This paradox of needing to decide without judging becomes so overwhelming that the only virtues of which they feel themselves capable are speed and constancy.

    You are asking these people to stop doing the one thing above all others upon which their society’s existence depends: assent.
