Does Watching Porn Make You Stupid?

F2_jordy_porn_550Poor Jordy.

Something about this sets off my bullshit detector, but I’m no scientist. However, I do know that most guys watch porn or at least have at one time or another. It’s hard to find statistics without dredging up a bunch of crap from the usual purveyors of moral outrage, but what little I could find suggested between 70% and 77% of American men watch porn. (and I bet a healthy slice of the one’s who say then don’t are lying.)

Anyway, this reminds me of all of the anti-masturbation stuff people used to believe… Wait. Used to? Forgot about this.

Researchers found less grey matter in the brains of men who watched large amounts of sexually explicit material, according to a new study.

The research, which appears in the journal JAMA Psychiatry, could not determine if porn actually caused the brain to shrink however, and the authors called for additional study on the topic.

“Future studies should investigate the effects of pornography longitudinally or expose naive participants to pornography and investigate the causal effects over time,” say researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Berlin, Germany.

The institute recruited 64 male subjects aged between 21 and 45 years old, “with a broad range of pornography consumption.”

The men were not told initially that the research was monitoring their brains on porn; rather that it was “a scientific study including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) measurements.”

The men were told during a later phone interview that questions about pornography would be part of the research, and none dropped out.

  1. 64 test subjects? Is the this same group of scientists who said they found marijuana reduced grey matter in the brain too then you find out their study consists of like 20 people?

I’m almost certain that porn has had very little to do with my own lack of intelligence….

    • If this was true people that masturbate without porn (if there are any) and people that have lots of sex would also have shrinking grey matter. This study is nonsense.

Real sex with an actual human being and masturbation to vicarious sex on a screen are not interchangable.

Oh please. The dumber you are, the more porn you can actually watch. What I mean by that is that most porn out there is so stupid, insipid and devoid of anything interesting aside from the sex itself (if you’re lucky), only the stupid watches a lot of it. From what I have seen, porn usually has a poor excuse for a scenario, and the sex is usually beyond believable. I don’t watch much of it, as my own imagination can do better.

Lots of porn won’t make you stupid, but to endure lots of porn, you have to be.

I find the better stuff doesn’t even pretend to have a plot at all.

Well yeah… if you’re good enough to create a work of art and beauty that requires no context or superficial framing, then you clearly know better than to add any.

    • less grey matter doesn’t mean stupider per say does it?

it could be less impulse control, thus when they get horny, for instance by a random sexually stimulating image in an advertisement they are more likely to act on it and follow through. it could provide more a dopamine hit to them, or at least the dopamine hit has more effect on them.

if this were the case, it could mean they have more sex in general. thus, impulsive people are breeding more, thus evolution ‘wants” people that are impulsive. studies have shown that people with add, bi-polar, etc in general have more sex.

i can see a lot of advantages to having less impulse control, maybe you act on base desires more, but it could also protect you from getting caught up permanent distractions because it would get boring.

i’m not sure if a society of people with less impulse control would have the same type of religion for instance. they might go back to a less literal and more abstract method of communication. seems to me that the ones that take things the most literal cause the most arguments amongst people because they don’t allow things to be interpreted by individuals.

or it could mean their lack of grey matter somehow correlates to less attractiveness and less real sex so they go online.

anyway, as the article demonstrates the the only thing that can really make you stupid once you’re an adult is yourself and the bias you apply to your world view. children can interpret data much more clearly, but then they are less able to protect themselves mentally without a bias filter, so there are pros and cons.

Intelligence is relative. So as long as everyone watches porn, nothing changes.

  8. InfvoCuernos | May 30, 2014 at 11:42 pm |

ITS TRUE!!! Especially if you like doing whippits and huffing headcleaner fluid while watching porn.

  9. Wtf? I have a hard time wrapping my brain, ravaged as it is by all that spankin it to porn, around why anyone cares if anyone else whacking off. Why is that even a thing? Is it some Puritan psychic vestige of fear that someone, somewhere might be having a good time? Seriously, it seems morbidly pathological.

  14. Derp it’s not the porn that causes brain damage. It’s the brain damaged person that watches to much of it.

    • kowalityjesus | Jun 1, 2014 at 10:53 pm |

zactly what i was thinking, correlation ≠ causation, but maybe there’s something to that “sublimating” idea after all…

  15. Gjallarbru | Jun 2, 2014 at 9:52 am |

Sort of my point. Brains that are fit could never endure much of anything that is as insipid as porn. What I’m saying is that the relation of IQ and porn isn’t exactly as depicted in the study.
