Female-Named Hurricanes Kill More Than Ones With Male Names Because People Don’t Respect Them

HurricaneWhat’s in a name? A lot, apparently. People die because they don’t respect hurricanes with female names.

Wait until Hurricane Aretha comes to town.

People don’t take hurricanes as seriously if they have a feminine name and the consequences are deadly, finds a new groundbreaking study.

Female-named storms have historically killed more because people neither consider them as risky nor take the same precautions, the study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences concludes

Researchers at the University of Illinois and Arizona State University examined six decades of hurricane death rates according to gender, spanning  1950 and 2012.  Of the 47 most damaging hurricanes, the female-named hurricanes produced an average of 45 deaths compared to 23 deaths in male-named storms, or almost double the number of fatalities.  (The study excluded Katrina and Audrey, outlier storms that would skew the model).

The difference in death rates between genders was even more pronounced when comparing strongly masculine names versus strongly feminine ones.

  1. This is the dumbest goddamn thing I have heard in days. There are so many factors involved in deaths from hurricanes including total population of the area hit, population density of the area hit, how many storm shelters were available and if people got in them, how structurally sound buildings were that people were hiding in, if there were storm surges that flooded areas i.e. New Orleans, etc etc.

    • Yes. I have a sneaking suspicion that if more people in New Orleans had the means to leave, no matter what the hurricane was named, they would have left. When your television is the only asset you have, it’s damn hard to load it into the car you don’t have and leave town.

Huh. In what way, exactly? Wondering if it could save some lives.

      • If someone is dumb enough to not listen to warnings of a coming hurricane just because it has a girls name I am not gonna say they need to die, but they definitely do not need to contaminate the gene pool further by having children.

        • Harsh… but fair.

          • Haha yea well im pretty convinced there will eventually be some sort of global restriction on child birth because of our impending over population crisis so why not start with the blatantly stupid people first. Either that or there will be a mass population purge either man made or naturally caused.

I’d start with people pushing for some sort of global restriction on child birth and people who make claims of a population crisis. They tend to be the most obvious choices – and the least likely to argue against it… since it was their idea. This would be like the fable of the mouse who suggested tying a bell to the cat’s tail.

You may need new euphemisms. Too many people are already aware of what you mean when you say ‘population control’ and ‘global restriction on child birth’ and such.

Perhaps we could let a few serial killers and mass-murderers free and just let fate decide who lives and dies? A little social Darwinism to spice things up, perhaps? The mass murderer with the most kills can get the Fritz A Lenz Award and will, I predict, be named Party Leader for his most excellent work in population control.

Crap. I better add a disclaimer before I am labelled a ‘voice of reason and logic’ by some of these numb-brains. I was being sarcastic.

          • Actually you obviously dont know what I mean because I didnt say half the shit you ASSUMED I meant. You might assume you know, but clearly do not, so take shit somewhere else.

          Says the eugenicist.

          • Says the person who has never seen the movie idiocracy. Guaranteed if we dont make our selves go extinct or are killed by some natural event we will be headed towards that direction.

          • Joe Crowe | Jun 5, 2014 at 1:34 pm |

You realize that you actually just said that you are more for eugenics than you are for eugenics? Are you also more for humanely ending the lives of the sick, elderly and handicapped than you are for euthanasia? I now see how one can be both for something and in favor of it – at the same time. That’s something I hadn’t considered prior to what you just said… or even before that.

You make a good case for population control, though. I’ll hand you that.

          • Uneducated or lower intelligence people generally have more kids thus adding to the population crisis. And no I never said we need to kill anyone. Just stop people from having so many kids

I’ve seen and enjoy that movie very much. But cultural disintegration is very different from the idea of genetic purity.

Careful, you’re going to offend people that are learning disabled. Also, you might offend Jesus, but we don’t really care about him.

So, this article is claiming that the hurricanes are killing off people that don’t take women storms seriously? I’m cool with that.

    • Yep. If that’s actually the case (and I think there are so many other factors that arriving at a definitive conclusion would be near-impossible), more power to the hurricane sisterhood.

    You’re thinking of a him-o-cane.
