Artist COLIN CHRISTIAN recently produced a body of work, outside of his usual “50’s and 60’s sci fi design – Barbarella – Anime/Gaming characters inspired” sculptures to step into a more vulnerable commentary about transition.   The works — a series entitled “TRYPOPHOBIA“‚ —  immediately went VIRAL, and is current on display at a gallery in Brooklyn NY until February 28 2015.   From the press release:

“TRYPOPHOBIA is from the greek τρύπα, “hole” and φόβος, “fear”, the pathological fear of objects with irregular patterns of holes. Seminal investigation of trypophobia, a biological revulsion rather than a learned cultural fear, reveals that a primitive portion of the brain associates the shapes with something dangerous. Clustered holes made individuals state that they felt that their skin is crawling, shudder, feel itchy, experience panic attacks, sweat, palpitate and feel physically sick. The Reeaction behind the phobia is an unconscious reflex reaction, an involuntary and nearly instantaneous movement in response to a stimulus.

In terms of existential symbolism, a hole is a package of nothing, a conspicuous manifestation of non-existence surrounded by existence, the physical occurrence of the two most fundamental metaphysical categories side by side. As such, it raises the ultimate question: Why is there anything at all rather than nothing?”

The opening reception for the exhibition was jam packed with fans and collectors, and held a few unique surprises.

Artists Kalyana Thiru and Nyahzul  created “Interpreters Multimedia” for the opening, which is an effort to celebrate the artist they admire by bringing multimedia artists together to make the opening more dynamic, the experience of being present at an opening becomes an art in itself.

“We felt inspired by Colin Christian’s efforts to create a body of work for a show which was the opposite of his usual work.” says Kalyana, “This inspired us with the idea of bringing Colin’s work to life in live models to show both beauty, appeal, juxtaposed with repulsion. We also brought in Dakini9 – a Dj – to interpret Colin’s work and play a set which was a conceptual interpretation.
