New York City once again hosts the wonderful Outsider Art Fair, starting today and running through January 24, 2016 at the Metropolitan Pavilion on West 18th Street. Disinformation was invited to the preview this afternoon and we can highly recommend it to anyone in or around the metro area, this weekend’s weather forecast notwithstanding.
Some highlights include a memorial exhibition of the extraordinary UFO-inspired paintings of Romanian artist Ionel Talpazan at American Primitive’s booth. Talpazan (1956-2015) used to be a fixture on the streets of Midtown Manhattan and his art has latterly achieved the recognition many people (this reporter included) think it deserves. As an aside for New Yorkers, the work of another disinformation favorite artist, Paul Laffoley, will be discussed in conjunction with Talpazan’s art at the American Folk Art Museum tomorrow, January 23rd, at the American Folk Art Museum in a lecture entitled “Spiritual Technology: Self-Taught Artists Consider The Cosmos.”
Another talent we think disinfonauts may like is Oscar Azmitia, an autistic New Yorker with a distinct sensibility. The painting below will give you an idea of where his head is at (and for those interested in buying art, Oscar’s work is surprisingly affordable – check it out at the Pure Vision Arts booth).
There’s an amazing range of work at the Outsider Art Fair. You won’t like it all but you may fall in love with an artwork that you can afford. Highly recommended weekend activity, snow notwithstanding!
