Judging From These Comments, How Big of a Douchebag is Maynard James Keenan?

Hey Thad, how’d you hear about Dinsfo.com back in the day? Well, from the band Tool actually. Their website turned me onto amazing shit like Mr. Show and Terrence McKenna as well, so you’ve got to give props. Where was I going to find weird things like that growing up in suburban Ohio pre-user friendly internet? Where indeed. And look, I’m not one of those guys who’s all embarrassed about their Tool fandom, but I will confess that as I’ve gotten older I’ve realized that I dig their music far more because of Danny Carey and Adam Jones than I do Maynard’s angry Jung man schtick.

Truth is, I find A Perfect Circle’s second album cringe worthy at times and not only have I never made it through a Puscifer album, I’ve literally never even made it through an entire Puscifer song. Not even a single track. That stuff just doesn’t work for me on any level. It’s like fingernails on a chalkboard. That all being said, this post is about comments ‘the Nard made over the weekend which got written up on the Blue Lives Matter website. Let me say that again, the front man for one of the world’s largest psychedelic bands is being quoted here by Blue Lives Matter:

“As artists, we interpret and report, that’s our job. We are merchants of emotion,”

“We have the privilege to do that because of active and former law enforcement and military defending our right to do so,” Keenan continued. “Those of you who are law enforcement and military, your job is to defend our right to act like whining, entitled snowflake assholes. Snowflakes, your job is to respect that I’m fucking doing that for you… Divided we fall. Don’t believe the hype dumb-dumbs, we’re all in this together.”

This is the point where I go: ha, ha, you bought into the click bait headline. I don’t necessarily disagree with anything Maynard said there. I’d file it firmly in “The Nard’s gonna Nard” territory and fairly low on the doucheometer. Buuuuuut at a time where things like drug war budgets and military spending are set to skyrocket because of corruption and religious hysteria, it also seems a bit dickish in a way, which is why it’s getting headlines. As someone who’s personally been pulled over, searched, and arrested for possession of LSD for exactly no reason, I might boo the fuck out of him if I happened to be at the show. So, has the money truly gotten to Maynard’s head? That probably happened a long time ago and who could blame him really. I love how in the article they mention that he used to be in the military, but fail to add anything about how critical of the experience he’s been since getting out. Where do you think that Lie, Cheat, and Steal line in the song Intolerance came from exactly?
