God, I love how people for some reason want to explain to me how awful liberals are and it’s like: no shit. Why do you think I don’t know this? I live in Seattle, we are one of the capitols of rich liberal hypocrisy. I love how Fox news was trying to slam us last week for attempting to actually, you know, raise taxes on rich people slightly. What they weren’t mentioning was that we currently have the most corrupt tax code in the country. Rich people pay less in taxes and poor people pay more here than pretty much anywhere. But we’re a “socialist hellhole”…where technically more millionaires live than anywhere else. Fuck, you can’t even afford to live here anymore if you’re middle class. You have to be rich. This just happened in the last 5 years or so as I lived here on the super cheap for over a decade before it went nuts.
Part of why this is going down has to do with Amazon taking over the city, what fun. About five months ago I signed a petition trying to get them to pull their funding from Breitbart, so it was unsurprising to read that of course this hasn’t actually happened. From The Stranger.
“So far, more than 2,300 companies and organizations have stopped advertising on Breitbart in response to the Sleeping Giants campaign, including well-known brands like Campbell’s Soup, Kellogg’s, Bed Bath & Beyond, Mercedes-Benz, Nestlé, Hallmark, Squarespace, and BMW. Even companies that are not known for their liberal sympathies—such as Uber, British Petroleum, and Chase Bank—have pulled their ads. According to the online media and marketing news site Digiday, the effect on Breitbart’s advertising base has been significant, with “just 26 brands appearing on Breitbart in May, down from a high of 242 in March.” (Though, as Digiday also notes, “even if Breitbart’s advertising dries up completely, it still has a billionaire benefactor in Robert Mercer,” the right-wing hedge fund manager who was a big supporter of both the Trump campaign and the Brexit push.)
Yet as other major companies abandon Breitbart advertising, Amazon remains a stubborn, silent holdout.
The company refuses to publicly respond to the demand that it stop funding Breitbart through ad buys. It did not reply to a request for comment for this article, and it has so far declined to heed the wishes of a group of more than 600 Amazon employees who have organized around this issue, calling on their employer to stop providing ad revenue for a site that mocks values the company claims to uphold in its day-to-day business practices.”
Here’s what’s fucked about this that you’d catch if you read the article. Jeff Bezos has this massive complex right in the thick of supposedly lefty Seattle and is surrounded daily by nothing but people who want him to do this, but he’s just like: “Nah, it’s a little bit of potential extra scratch guys, no can do.”
Which made me contemplate something. What is going on with new money lefty billionaires? How is it possible they’re this weak? Seriously, not only have their uber douche older money contemporaries been outspending them in the straight up propaganda market for years (the Koch brothers largely funded Breitbart), but the Tea Party kicked these guy’s assess clean over the last decade. I mean really, a bunch of creepy right wingers wage an intentional campaign to ramp up racism and get a bunch of Ayn Rand worshiping nuts to take over the House and Senate, and they’re like: This is Fine. Everything’s fine. Totally Useless.
I got this several year old climate change denial documentary Greedy Lying Bastards from my Netflix queue several months back and in watching it something occurred to me. I mean, the Koch brothers are spending all this money on politics mainly because it makes them cash in the short term. We lessen restrictions on fossil fuel standards and it goes into their pockets. They get huge tax breaks and it goes into their pockets.
The problem is that our supposedly lefty captains of tech make money either way. No two shits are given who’s in office really. Who cares if hate crimes are up right? Who gives a fuck about the environment? Fucking…useless.
If you ever want to barf, take a look at this year’s Forbes billionaires list. In perusing through that I noticed something that people don’t talk about much. Technically the Koch brothers combined are currently the richest person on earth with a net worth of over 96 billion dollars. But hey, Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates, and Mark Zuckerberg are right there licking at their heels, and richer as individuals. But they just so happen to give zero fucks at all. When you look at the fine print, who was paying for a bunch of the fake news that helped get us into this mess? Oh yeah, Google. They were the ones paying those kids in Macedonia to spread that shit. Who cares where those ad dollars are coming from right? Facebook wasn’t turning down that blood money either. Say it with me now: Completely fucking useless.
