Great news! Scientists from Oxford University in the UK believe they have proven in principle that our universe cannot be a program in a super computer run by intelligent machines or some voyeuristic alien race. That is, at least not any sort of computer we can imagine existing in any sort of conceivable universe from our current perspective. Apparently some things in this universe are so complex you can’t program them. Hurray! This is important I think not only because it is evidence to drown out some of the more annoying tech billionaire’s fantasies, but also because it can refresh a sense of wonder and mystery into the non-electronic aspects of reality. The questions of what we are, who we are, where we come from, and where we are going, are no longer able to be boxed in by alien IBM fears but rather we’re back to ‘the we really have no idea what sort of thing or process could construct something as vast and complicated as this universe’ perspective. Wonderful news for the those of us who suspect or at least hope that mind is more fundamental than matter, but also good reason for tech billionaires to stop wasting money trying to get us out of a simulation that apparently we probably were never in to begin with.
