You May Be Cool, but You’ll Never Be Dave Wyndorf Covering Hawkwind in Outer Space Cool

How’s the new Monster Magnet album? Well, it’s way more Power Trip than Spine of GodDopes to Infinity, or even Last Patrol and I’m certainly far fonder of their more psychedelic stuff (if you don’t know what I’m talking about, get really high and look it up on YouTube right now). That being said, it’s supposed to be big dumb fun and it is in fact that in droves. Not my favorite side of the Magnet, but it’s not like I’m not amused either. Particularly in this freaking video. I mean, such a simple concept, Monster Magnet covering Hawkwind in outer space right? It shouldn’t work but then again, wait, why wouldn’t that work exactly? Everything about this works.

The other reason I bring this up has to do with the fact that MM are in fact the reason I checked out Hawkwind in the first place back in the day. The funny part there being that Dave talked them up constantly, even covering Brainstorm on Superjudge, but then I couldn’t find any of their albums anywhere. As it turned out, Hawkwind didn’t have the greatest distribution in Midwest 90’s CD stores. This was back when the internet was mostly useless, so I don’t think I actually heard Hawkwind until roughly 2001 when I moved to Seattle and found a ton of their shit at the library. Good times.
