Does the Rainbow Connection Involve Some Sort of Freaky Hypnagogic Dream Channeling? Apparently So.

This week in weird esoteric references in pop culture:

You know that thing where you’ve had a couple drinks and your wife insists on listening to The Rainbow Connection even though you’re pretty sure it’s going to make both of you cry because it basically always does. Then when you’re getting misty listen-y (sorry) you finally catch that the titular connection at least partially involves channeling voices in your hypnagogic sleep states? Yeah, that thing’s weird, but dig:

“We know that it’s probably magic
Have you been half asleep and have you heard voices?
I’ve heard them calling my name
Is this the sweet sound that calls the young sailors
The voice might be one and the same
I’ve heard it too many times to ignore it
It’s something that I’m supposed to be”

Hearing voices when you’re half asleep, that’s what it’s all about now, isn’t it? Someday we’ll find it, some glorious day.
