Obama, Biden Welcome Pope Francis / FEMEN Protests

In 2012, POUS said "I think same-sex couples should be able to get married" on "Good Morning America." Then in the 2013 State of the Union, "restore the basic bargain that built this country... get ahead... no matter who you love." In February a Vatican Archbishop defined marriage "only between a man and a woman" and likened same sex marriage to a "sick egalitarianism." NARAL had endorsed Obama's 2012 reelection, describing him as "pro-choice" on NARAL.org. On Nov 7th, Reuters reported on a statement to the president-elect about promoting "a culture of life" from the Vatican. It's perhaps unsurprising that activist group, FEMEN–which identifies as an "international women's movement" based in Ukraine–protested in Vatican City on Tuesday (from RT.com). A video shows a protester shouting "Pope No More!"...

Pixelated Misogyny

Last May, Anita Sarkeesian–founder of Feminist Frequency–launched a Kickstarter for a video series about "stereotypes of female characters" in video games. The description begins, "I love playing video games but I’m regularly disappointed in the limited and limiting ways women are represented. " With an initial goal of $6,000, it ultimately raised $158,922 from 6,967 backers. While this outcome speaks to the level of interest, Sarkeesian has written about receiving a "torrent of misogyny and hate speech" and "intimidation and harassment" from the gaming community.

MRAs rebrand as ‘Men’s Human Rights Activists’

MHRM?
Last Spring, the Southern Poverty Law Center (splcenter.org) profiled a group of websites as “woman-hating.”

Among these were some popular spaces for “the men’s rights movement,” including avoiceformen.comthe-spearhead.commensactivism.org and the men’s rights subreddit.

On January 21st 2013 (MLK Day), A Voice for Men used the words, “privileged white bitches in our dust” to boast outranking Feministing.com via Alexa’s traffic data. AVfM’s tagline is “compassion for boys and men.”

Another url, Manboobz.com positions itself as a watchdog for this community. For example, a recent post exposed a commenter at The Spearhead who suggested something like prison “whorehouses” for women.

In the past few weeks, some MRAs have started to promote new acronyms: MHRA and MHRM, for Men’s Human Rights Activism and Men’s Human Rights Movement.

If you do a search for feminism on Youtube, the first result ironically is an anti-feminist video with more than 500,000 views from MRA (MHRA), Girl Writes What. Last week, this user posted a video discussing the name change, which she says encourages inclusiveness.… Read the rest

Why did FLOTUS present award for ‘Argo’?

Okay, I’ll admit I haven’t seen Argo, nor did I pay attention to the Oscars. I don’t really know the details of the 1979 Iran hostage crisis either.

I guess I should watch the movie.

Vaguely, I remember a Republican talking point, “Iran is four years closer to a nuclear weapon,” in the 2012 debates. The choice of words struck me as war-hawkish and ominous, but without qualification.

Obama had said in one debate, “As long as I’m president of the United States, Iran will not get a nuclear weapon.” Not really sure what that meant either, other than the US might do something.

Fast forward to last night, Michelle Obama introduced the award for Argo with the following:

“They taught us that love can endure against all odds… And they reminded us that we can overcome any obstacle if we dig deep enough and fight hard enough and find the courage to believe in ourselves.”

The language could be more suggestive of wartime morale boosting than a celebration of actors putting on a show in a film.… Read the rest
